SEPM console "Unexpected Server Error"

  • 1.  SEPM console "Unexpected Server Error"

    Posted Dec 13, 2011 09:41 AM

Currently we are running SEP 11.6 on a Windows 2003 VM server with an embedded data base.  Each morning while attempting to log on to the console an "unexpected server error" is given, in order to clear this I must reboot the VM.  I have checked my embedded data base setting as well as IIS as per another forum, asssistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

It might be happening that Symantec Embedded database service is stopping in background so that when you are trying to login into the console getting "unexpected error"

Before reboot check whether you can start Embedded database service manually ?

    Hello Ray ,

    Please try following articles

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH146458

following link has E-track mentioned ie fix id in it some one from Symantec team should confirm if this is fixed

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH162747

Could you re-run management server configuration wizard as it will find the domain and then eventually services will be started with sucessful login to Sepm .

    • Reset Internet Information Services (IIS)

    1. Go to start run and type services.msc check for (IIS) right        click and restart or

    2. Go to start run and type (iisreset) Click OK restart the console machine and Log into SEPM console.

If problem not solved after restarting the IIS, also follow the below steps:

    • If you are using embedded database follow the below steps:

    1. Open Control Panel > Administrator Tools Double click Data sources

    (ODBC)

    2. On the System DSN tab, double-click symantecEndpointSecurityDSN

    3. On the Database tab, type in the Server name (computer name) of your Manager, where the database resides. If computer name does not work, try the IP number or fully qualified domain name.

    4. On the Login tab, supply the user ID and password for the Symantec Embedded Database (defaults to the first admin password you ever used for the SEPM).

        User ID: dba

        Password: <password>

    5. On the Network tab, confirm that TCP/IP is checked and the value has either HOST= or IP= with your server's IP

    6. Leave the defaults for the rest of the items and return to the ODBC tab

    7. Click Test Connection, it should return "Success"

    8. Click OK and restart the console machine and Log into SEPM console.

For SEPM console machine if you go to server machine it good

Not only have I restarted the DB service, then tryed to start the console with the result "Unexpected server error" but I also tested the connection without any changes to find that the connection was secessful (as it always have been), same result.  In the SCM log there are several DB is not connected, but when I go to test the connection all is well, then once again if I reboot the VM the console operates normally.  I'll be sending the logs later.....end of transmission

The connection tested successful and the config seems to be correct.  When the situation occurs I first look at the DB service, when restarted the console still doesn't allow login, even if I restart the SEPM service.  The only thing that seems to work is rebooting the VM.

Run Management Server Configuration Wizard once and change the Server name from host name to ip address of the server. Then check how it works. If still you face the issue then try the step mentioned below.

    * Run dbsrv9.exe from SEPM\ASA\Win32 \

    * Provide the server name and point the app to the sem5.db inside sepm\db folder .. It ill try to initiate a connection with database

Still if you face the issue.

    upload catalina.out and scm-sever-0.log file.

    Thanks & Regards,

Try opening the IIS and select the website and symantec Website and right click on Reporting and click on Browse

Do you get the login screen or what is the message you get

Can you also post the IIS log

Checked ODBC connection on the server - successsful

Verified IIS config as per other forums as well as Sameer

The only thing that seems to work is rebooting the VM so far until we upgrade to 12.1

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thanks so far for all the inputs.
