SEPM Fails to Load or install with Java 6 update 10 & 11

Up to now we've been able to use SEPM with Java 6.  In fact I have it working on a 1.6 update 7.   I went to assist another admin with getting the console installed and was surprised to see that the installation of the SEPM console failed, without an error being logged anywhere.  When I inquired as to his version of java he said it was java 6 update 10.  He tried on another workstation with java 6 update 11 with the same results.  I had a co worker attempt the same install and also attempted an install on a VM client with updates 10 and 11 respectively.  The clients are XP and Vista.  In all cases the SEPM application failed to install.

On the VM I rolled back to Java 5 update 17 and SEPM installed and ran without a problem.  But as soon as I updateto the latest version (java 6 uodate 11) it fails to launch.

Is there an update on the horizon for SEPM or a fix I don't know about?  I thought we were beyond the java version issues.

This makes selling a java management interface as the way to go tough when updating your java install craps out the management interface.  Maybe Symantec needs to consider going back to using the mmc.

I had to roll back from the latest Java 6 update for the console to work as well.  I agree that it's quite frusterating.

You don't have to roll back (and due to the security fixes in jre6u11, you don't really want to).  What I did was manually install jre6u7, then make a copy of the SEPM shortcut, with the Target changed to point to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\javaws.exe" instead of "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\javaws.exe".  Make sure you wrap the path in double-quotes, since it has a space in it.

That way your default jre is still update 11, but SEPM will use update 7.  Hopefully when MR4 is released, I'll be able to uninstall jre6u7 and delete the shortcut.  MR3 doesn't work with jre7 snapshots from https://jdk7.dev.java.net/ either, so I'm hoping MR3 just had a useless version check that was removed from MR4.

MR4 isn't going to help.  This is what you get if you have 1.6 u10 or greater installed.  "The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager cannot display some parts of the management console because your computer runs one or more incompatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) versions.  Please uninstall all incompatible JRE versions (1.6 update 10 and greater). Uninstall the remote console, and then reinstall the remote console."

If Symantec expects to continue using Java for SEPM they are going to have to get better at making it java agnostic, get faster out the gate in keeping up with Sun or switch to a different platform.

FYI, Sun has Java 1.5's end of life set for Oct 2009.

I just upgraded to MR4 to fix problems with remote console and now am in the same boat-- we're running 1.6 update 10 and we're not back-revving.  Ugh.:smileymad:
