as a best practices you need to stop replication.but as per below articles you don't need to stop replication in sepm 12.1.(Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 and later does not require that you turn off replication before you upgrade.)

Yes thats the procedure ( just to make sure that it secondary does not write anything to DB while upgrading the schema)

Stop the service on secondary, upgrade the primary

Stop the primary , upgrade the secondary.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Symantec community.

I would be glad to answer your query.

Are they two standalone servers? or they replicating with each other? sharing the same database?

If they are Standalone server then no need to stop secondary server services.

If they are replicating then need to break the replication piror to start an upgrade & Before you upgrade, you must manually stop the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service on every management server in your site. After you upgrade, the service starts automatically.

    Hi Chetan,

Both are sharing the same database.

One article mentions to stop replication while another says it's not needed:

Upgrade or migrate to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5

I've always stopped replication prior to the upgrade so as not to break anything. You can do whatever works for you but just be aware.

Thanks for the update. Stop the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service on every management server in your site. After you upgrade, the service starts automatically.
