    Posted Aug 08, 2011 08:13 AM

    Hi,

I've just returned from holiday to find SEPM cannot startup and trying to run dbvalidation to interrogate the database also threw out an error

    2011-08-05 15:42:55.343 INFO: logger initialized ...
    2011-08-05 15:42:55.343 INFO: SEPM Server Home:[C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Tools\..\tomcat]
2011-08-05 15:43:32.455 SERIOUS: ERROR: can't init database. exit.

    Catalina.out shows these errors

    Aug 8, 2011 1:08:40 PM com.sygate.scm.server.util.ServerLogger writeHeader
    SEVERE: java.vm.version = 1.5.0_15-b04

Trying to startup the embedded db service fails.

So I strongly suspect is a corrupt database - I have tried following various other links regarding changing tomcat ports - didnt help.

Can anyone provide any help of how can recover this (ive tried the symantec repair option  but that got halfway through and then came to a block trying to configure (couldnt connect to DB, of course, because the db service isnt running)

Any help GREATLY and Urgently appreciated, as currently AV updates have now been outdated on all clients for the last month!

    Thanks

    Dave

    Hi

    Please try following

    1. Checked odbc connection from start >admin templates>odbc > system dsn>configure>login >dba as user name for embedded and your password for symantec db
    2. test connection and then try to start sepm embedded service from services console
    3. if no luck then disable all services for symantec from services console
    4. reboot the machine
    5. start all services
    6. and then initate management server configuration wizard

Hi Swapnil - went in  to configure SEPsecurity DSN. login has dba and passwor dalready there - I have no idea what password would be so didnt want to change anything here (was remotely configured by a symantec engineer several years ago).

How do I test whether can connect to db?

Service still failing even after a reboot.

    Hello,

Since its a Symantec Endpoint Protection SBE version 12.0 and after looking at the Error message provided, it clearly indicates that there has been a Data corruption.

    Check this Article:

    Hope this helps!!!

Could you please try running upgrade.bat from Drive:\program files\symantec\sepm\bin

check if this works if this windows pop up and goes away then re run management server from start all programs symantec\sepm\sepm tools

    smiley

after reading a similar forum post where a user was sent through hoops of symantec tweaks and utilities and resolved themselves by restoring the contents of the db folder from tape backup (ymantec restore tool doesnt work unless the db service is running - tricky with a corrupt db!) and then repairing sepm from add/remove programs, thought Id try this and -EUREKA - it works.

so thanks for all contributions, but sometimes basics works best.
