      Hello,

I am trying to assist a co-worker setup or verify that our computers with SEP go to our SEPM for virus definition updates.  Our SEPM is on a central server and under LiveUpdate and then LiveUpdate Settings Policy our Server Setting is to "Use the default management server (recommended)" exactly like the first picture of the support document here : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007092720522748 .

Is that all we need to do for our computers to update their virus definitions and other SEP information?

As best as I can determine we do not want to setup a GUP which I think is used to go from one MR to the newest.  Nor do we have a number of products to update which LUA is used for.

All help and verification is appreciated.  Thank you,

             PJ

GUP is used to update definitions to remote branches.

gup takes definition from SEPM and distributes it to all clients in its group.

If just Use the default management server (recommended) is selected then clients will only go to SEPM for def updates.

If you do not want to use a GUP or LUA, THATS ALL WHAT YOU NEED.

when you have Use the default management server  it menas that

Downloads the updates from the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager, and this setting is recommended for most organizations. This option is the simplest and requires no configuration other than applying this policy to a group.

     Hi,

That is all you need to do for your clients to update from the SEPM.
It is the default setting for the LU policy as well so as to work "out of box" on small to medium one site networks.

GUP are useful for deploying definitions to remote sites such as a branch office which may have a slow link to the main site where SEPM is.
LUA is really only to be used in specific cases only and in will not be needed in the vast majority of networks.

    Regards

    Thank for your responses.
I was able to better understand the responses than the support documents I found linked in other forum posts.
In the end it came down to we do want to use GUPs since we have branches and would like the server at the branch to request updates instead of 10-15 computers.
