  • 1.  SEPP11.X Cannot update on dell laptop.

    Posted Jun 20, 2009 01:37 PM
I have a client whos personal laptop has gotten something on it that has blocked me from running the SEPP11.x for updates or scans. I cannot unload, remove or do any other type of maintenance functions. I have tried starting in safe mode to no avail. I beleive it is some type of root kit. I cannot plug any type of USB device into it so I pulled the drive and am scanning it from another machine via an external enclosure. Ayone have a tool or suggestion?

Can run an Intelligent updater on that machine to update to the latest virus defs and then try scanning!

The Intelligent Updater is an executable file that can be used to update virus definitions for the Symantec Endpoint Protection client . Run the Daily Certified or Rapid Release Intelligent Updater on the local computer.

Try downloading manually and install or download from another machine and then burn a disc and install!! hopefully that should remove the virus(if detected)

To use the Daily Certified Intelligent Updater to update definitions for the Symantec Endpoint Protection client :

    1. Download the Intelligent Updater by going to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html
    2. Select the language and for the product, select Symantec Endpoint Protection.
    3. Locate the correct file to download for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 depending on whether it's for 32-bit or 64-bit operating system
    4. Click the file specified for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, for example, "20071008-016-v5i32.exe" (for 32-bit) or "20071008-016-v5i64.exe" (for 64-bit) and download to your hard drive.
    5. Locate the file that you downloaded, double-click to run the Intelligent Updater.

To use the Rapid Release Intelligent Updater to update definitions for the Symantec Endpoint Protection client :

    1. Download the Intelligent Updater by going to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/rapidrelease.download.html
    2. Locate the correct file to download for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 depending on whether it's for 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.
    3. Click the file specified for Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, for example, "vd2a5020.jdb" (for 32-bit) or "symrapidreleasedefsv5i64.exe" (for 64-bit) and download to your hard drive.
    4. Locate the file that you downloaded, double-click to run the Intelligent Updater for 64-bit systems.
    5. For 32-bit Manager systems, refer to How to update definitions for Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager using the .jdb file.
    6. For 32-bit Client systems, refer to How to manually update definitions for a managed Symantec Endpoint Protection Client using the .jdb file.

I anded up getting it to load into safe mode. From there I reset the security Db to the defaults and I know have access to the machine and Internet. I had already downloaded the daily update file. I am running a full scan right now. I will update as events unfold. Thanks for the help though!

OK. I got it to go out and run updates. Things seem ok. I have started to reenable service and such. After getting just about everything reenabled I started getting random BSOD! Stop 21a's and c6's. I tried to run the chkdsk util and am having issues with it now. I think I am going to yank the disk out and stick it in the external case and defrag that way. If that works I will plug it back into the laptop and see what she will do . I just rebooted and am getting corrupt file error in the temp dir....hmmmmm. File 13 is starting to sound good! I will update agin in a while.

The difference is that the rapid releases do not have a signature and moreover they are not tested for the stability but to fix a virus threat that juz broke!! Simple terms the radid releases are just similar to hot fixes released by Microsoft!
