SERT ISO update

Hi there,

Recently I stumbled on this:

http://agnipulse.com/2009/12/kaspersky-rescue-disk-updater/
It's a batch file that updates the ISO of the Kaspersky recue disk (the equivalent of SERT).
It would be nice to have that for SERT.

I have two pet peeves about SERT:

1. The definitions are WAY out of date, which makes the download of the current definition very long.

2. I am mostly using 1.0.17 instead of the more current 2.0.24 because 2.0.24 is not compatible with my multiboot GRUB4DOS USB stick (1.0.17 is compatible). This makesthings even worse.

It would be heck nice to have a SERT ISO that is

1. Compatible with multiboot scheme such as GRUB4DOS
2. Updatable so it is only slightly outdated.

Hint hint -- I'm a support professional; I make my customers buy what I like.

Created a Connect Forum Idea?

Hi Networker,

Cheers for the feedback!

Have you considered placing your recommendations in the Ideas section of the Forum?  That's the palce where community memebers get to vote by giving a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" to proposed enhancement requests.

With thanks and best regards,

Mick

Created an IDEA

Hello,

I have created an IDEA on your behalf.

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/ideas/rescue-disk-sert

You can surely promote it. I myself would like to promote the same.

Thank you very much.

Hope that helps!!

I've talked to product

I've talked to product management about adding a front end wizard for SERT similar to NBRT and it's in work. The wizard would allow you to easily create the bootable USB or CD and live update from within the wizard app. On top of that several of us have asked for proxy support to be added to SERT so updates can be downloaded automatically when you run SERT

Check out the Endpoint SWAT site as well

This site allows for customization of the SERT distribution on to a USB drive - navigate to Utilities and then scroll down.  The SERT distribution does allow for command line capability and also for leveraging security content that has been unpacked directly on the USB. If it does not see anything or it has not been assigned to go to that folder, as you have stated, it downloads the current content from Symantec.

Otherwise a method for auto update on current existing, security content is a great idea for an enhancement.

Updating SERT

This link shows how to update the SERT. And since it's downloaded as an ISO format, I'm assuming that most users burn them to CD. (Also to prevent being infected?)

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

I do like the idea of having compatibilities resolved.

Also, I have no clue on how this can be made any simpler. SERT at this time can be updated, assuming it's burned to CD and the client PCs have USBs enabled. It is a low level scan, if I'm correct. And it takes 4 hours or more to complete. Oftentimes, it's faster to backup, reformat and restore IMHO.

I have not found SERT  that

I have not found SERT  that useful. We resort to capturing the users data from the drve and reimaging. Quicker solution and the user is able to return to work sooner.
