Video Screencast Help

The server port you chose is not used by the database server.

Created: 29 Dec 2009 • Updated: 05 Jul 2010 | 16 comments

Installed SEP 11.0 about six moths ago on Win Server 03. Two weeks ago i ran an NTbackup.exe for the first time and now i cannot get into SEP database. Tried to restart service, would not start. Changed port number and then went back to start service, still would not work. I read somewhere deep on the web that microsoft ntbackup.exe listens on the same port that SEPM listens on. Possible conflict. Any suggestions on get SEPM up and started again without reinstall. Thanks.

Steps to reconfigure the embedded database for use a port other than 2638:

    1. Click on Start> Run
    2. Type services.msc
    3. Click Ok
    4. Stop the "Symantec Endpoint protection Manager" Service.
    5. Stop the "Symantec Embedded Database" Service.
    6. Close the Services window
    7. Click on Start> Run>
    8. Type regedit
    9. Click Ok
    10. In “Registry Editor” look for the following key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\asanys_sem5\parameters

    11. Double-click on Parameter DWORD Value
    12. Change 2638 to 2639 (Advised) or any other port which you want to use.
    13. Close the "Registry Editor"
    14. Click on Start> run>
    15. Type services.msc
    16. Click Ok
    17. Start the "Symantec Embedded Database" Service.

Warning: Do not start the "Symantec Endpoint protection Manager" Service yet.

    18. Click on Start> Programs> Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager> Management Server Configuration Wizard
    19. Select Reconfigure the Management
    20. Click Next
    21. Change the Server port to 8440
(If you wish to reconfigure this port as well, if not, ignore this step and click Next)

    22. Change the database server port to 2639
    23. Enter the <password> (Password used for Replication)
    24. Click Next
Note: If any special character is used, the wizard will not allow the password, please see “Changing the database password to a non complex password” at
      http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2008011823355248

    25. The wizard will take you to the final screen after re-synchronizing the application and the database is now ready to be used on the new port.

Thanks & Regards

First you check the odbc connection
Refer the below link
The Home, Monitors and Reports tabs in the Symantec Endpoint Protection Management console fail to load while attempting to connect to the database.

I agree with Aravind. In the logs you have posted above, there is an error : Cannot create PoolableConnectionFactory (JZ006: Caught IOException: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect)

Let us know if ODBC connection was the cause of the issue.

My server name was blank. Put server name in and tested. Received this message: Connection failed unable to start database server. So i went into services and tried to start symantec embedded database, got this message:The symantec embedded database service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do , example performance logs and alerts. Any other suggestions? Thank you.

Grant_Hall's picture

Well usually that error means that the database is corrupt. Please check is dbsrv.exe running in the task manager? If that database is actually corrupt then a reinstall of the SEPM will be required. Keep trying other things (such as Ghents troubleshooting tip below) too to make sure it isn't some other issue.

Cheers
Grant

First, run "NETSTAT -anop tcp" inside a command prompt to identify which port the database is listening on so you know for sure what port it's using.
Second, you can manually set the port SEPM tries to connect on inside the %SEPM%\tomcat\conf\server.xml
You should see a section like this:
<parameter>

  <name>url</name>
  <value>jdbc:sybase:Tds:localhost:2638/?JCONNECT_VERSION=5</value>
  </parameter>

Note the :2638, that is the port number that SEPM is going to try to connect to the database on. Make sure that number matches the port number inside NETSTAT. Also, make sure the port number listed in NETSTAT is actually the Embedded Database Port, and not some other application.

Cheers.
