ServiceDesk 7 is currently

ServiceDesk 7 is currently scheduled to ship at the end of August.  CMDB 7 is scheduled for release in the next week or so.  Here is some licensing info:

How will ServiceDesk licensing be handled?

Customers on Helpdesk AUP will be given credit for the products that are already purchased and supported.
For new customers, a ‘Base Product’ license will be required for all Service Desk installations. It includes 5 concurrent Analyst Seats, 1 concurrent CMDB seat and all workflow server and designer components needed to run the full ServiceDesk functionality.

The Analyst Seat license allows for editing of tickets as well as the workflows used within ServiceDesk. Note: only the ‘out of box’ ITIL processes developed by Symantec will run on the ServiceDesk server. If additional workflows are needed, then the customer must purchase a Workflow license. Any user will be able to create an incident or change request, browse the Knowledge Base, run reports and perform a number of other functions without consuming a license.

Additional Analyst Seat licenses or CMDB licenses can be purchased through the Single Analyst Seat or CMDB SKUs.

Workflow Designer will be included with the SD7 ?

Hi, great news - we were having a contrary information in there. Just a "runtime" workflow, and not able to "design" new workflows !
So AUP Helpdesk 6 customers will have full workflow featured ? That will be really nice & clever from Symantec doing such.

==> oops, I just read later lines below, so bad !

There are changes to made to

There are changes to made to workflow licensing and how that all works.  Within Service Deks you will have access to edit and change any part of the existing Service Desk workflows.  When you want to work outside of the existing SErvice Desk workflows or any other external integrations you will need a license of the full version of workflow.

Hope that helps.

Service desk 7 is in Closed beta

Right now SD 7 is in closed beta adn I have to admit it works pretty good. I have been testing for the last 2 weeks. It comes with a Workflow Designer which you need if you want to do some customizations like Forms, SLA's, Routing rules, email templates etc.

Drop me a note if you would like more info.

Where is the Information?

Thanks for the info...If its going to be GA by the end of the month, then where can i get whitepapers on it?  Why has Symantec not said anything formally?  I spoke to a couple of sales reps last week and they said it might not even be out this year?

Some Hardware Info

Here is some hardware and OS requirements:

NS 7 where the Service Desk solution gets installed together with the CMDB, the Service Desk solution is basic for the install files and licensing.

SQL server, SQL 2005 SP2, can be 64-bit if seperate or if installed on the actual Service Desk server, if the SQL server resides on the NS then 32-bit is your only option since the current NS doesn't support 64-bit.

Service Desk server, Windows 2003 64-bit, Multi core Cpu's, 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB is recommended.

Hopefully this helps to plan ahead for Hardware

Andrew Bosch follow up question

Hi Andrew, I had a follow up question on your note.

Our consultant Rob who also posted here has been getting us all ready for ServiceDesk 7.
We have been impressed with what we've seen and the testing we've done so far.
It is getting close so a lot of our customers are asking more specific questions now.

To follow up on your note, we have some conflicting information regarding Workflow.
If a ServiceDesk 7 customer decides they need additional workflows and want to purchase a Workflow license.......will Basic be sufficient or is Advanced needed ? Are there any other nuances to the new licensing that are important to share with customers?

Any additional information will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

 Hello Frank, Workfow 7 is

 Hello Frank,

Workfow 7 is much more simple than Workflow 6.  Workflow "Basic" is what is now included in the Symantec Management Platform - for FREE.  It allows you to build workflows that connect technologies built on the platform (i.e. Patch, Software Delivery, Inventory, etc.).  If a customer would like to build workflows that connect to external systems (such as SAP, an HR system, etc.) then they will need to purchase Workflow 7 Solution.  It's that simple - they can use the free version that is available out-of-the-box or "upgrade" to the full-blow Workflow Solution.

Hope this helps,

Andrew

Does this mean

Andrew,

Does that mean that with Service Desk 7, I am allowed to create a Workflow, like for instance a new hire process, which is just an internal workflow, no connections to external systems and make that availeble in the process manager service catalog?

I have to retract...

I have to retract that previous statement.  With ServiceDesk 7, you will need a Workflow Solution license in order to make your workflow available through the process manager service catalog.

With the "basic" Workflow functionality will allow you to create workflows and publish them to IIS and make them available to the NS, however, you will not be able to make it available in the process manager service catalog.  Again, that would require a full Workflow Solution license.

I apologize for the confusion.

Yep - I was Enjoy this news too quickly...
Andrew: Is it possible to buy outsourced "workflows" build elsewhere, and integrate them into SD 7 ?

Any news on system requirements...??

The system requirements on the Symantec page are fairly vague, and even suggest this can run on 32-bit as well as 64-bit Windows Server OS?

I've heard rumors that this product isn't something you can just try out on test kit, that you need top-end kit with tonnes of dedicated resource to get started. I can't find yet any mention though of memory/processor requirements.

And, err... if the above is true, our server capital expenses purchased last year to resource us through to 2011 might turn out to be embarrasingly underbudgeted.... ;-)

Kind Regards,
Ian./

P.S. As an aside -surprised to see on the information presented that SQL Server 2008 isn't supported yet, or even SQL 2005 SP3.

64-bit for the actual Service desk server

Ian,

The actual Service Desk server will need 64-bit, multicore CPU's and a minimum of 8 GB, 16 Gb recommended.
The SQL server can be 32 or 64-bit depending if you run it seperatly (32 or 64-bit), on the actual Service Desk server (64-bit) or on the NS 7 server (32-bit).

Service Desk 7

Having taken part in the Beta testing program, the installation for SD7 is different to that which we are used to as it goes via the SIM application and as such requires and tests that the host machine meets minimum requirements. During the beta the minimum memory for the SD7 Server was 12GB and so attempting to install on a server with less would not be authorised.

I'm sorry, but I have to say

I'm sorry, but I have to say this. The long awaited Altiris Service desk needs a minimum of 12GB to run? I thought the 64-bit machine was just to give it some extra oomph -but this is actually so it can gobble memory?

So, no matter how small you are, you have to have this separate beast for your service desk?

I am horrified, and I am absolutely shocked that noone else is.

workflows run in memory

the workflows of the process manager all run in memory, so the more processes running the more memory it requires.

Hi Jonathan, So why make 12GB

Hi Jonathan,

So why make 12GB the minimum? Is that what's required just for the basic processes with nothing else on top? Our helpdesk for example has at anyone time about 200 incidents in the opened state. I am struggling to understand the 12GB of RAM requirement in this instance.

People seem to be very accepting of this, all because its in 'workflow'.

As a physicist, I could execute hundreds of differential equations simulatenously simulating complex circuitry involving hundreds of transistors  to real-time circuit flows, and although all this was in memory with transistor voltages changing continuously. This was done with a very modest memory requirement, because we had to. We were forced code efficiently and throw away tonnes of design models till we found one which worked quickly and efficiently.

I am struggling to understand why workflow is more complex -the input and output states for each workflow component is discrete and limited. Each rule is in essence an equation.

It seems to me that in order to simply test service desk 7 I have to commit a massive sum of money. I can't possibly hope to test this on the infrastructure I have in place.

From the partner point of view -how are you guys going to demo this to clients? When we purchased Altiris, we brought in three vendors to test out their solutions. If we were to go through that process again with Service Desk 7 I'd be struggling not to laugh at the requirements.

I really want and need to understand this requirement. If anyone out there can shove some documents my way, I'd appreciate it.

Kind Regards,
Ian./

Keep in mind that I use this

Keep in mind that I use this for testing purposes only, I would never run this in production. Since only 1 user logs in at the time, it is workable. So for just be able to have a quick look at it, you can run it on VMWare Workstation. CPU utiltization is around 50-60%, you do see a memory peak when you actually start to kick of some of the processes. But again for simple testing purposes it is workable.

good questions

Ian,

Good questions.

Let me address the demo statements first.  Two ways we demo Service Desk to our customers is through using a cloud service (Skytap) where we have a virtual machine of 8 gigs of RAM and also a CMDB 7 server which talk to each other.  The second way is we have a dedicated server for Service Desk that is 8 GIGs of RAM and then a seperate VM part of our ESXi farm that is CMDB7 which talk to each other.  Then we demo through using those systems.  If you have sat through one our (ITS) demos you have seen them.  If you would like to watch the recorded webcasts they are available at this page, including the ServiceDesk webcasts or request your own demo.

I don't understand why workflows are so memory intensive but what I know is the Process Manager holds the state of the workflow in RAM.    I agree that is a bit excessive.  For me this is making the ServiceDesk not as available to the small to medium sized business.  Don't know if that was the design but it is what is happening

just curious

"I don't understand why workflows are so memory intensive but what I know is the Process Manager holds the state of the workflow in RAM.  "

So having not yet used workflow I have to ask, what happens when you reboot the workflow/Service Desk server?

64-bit?  Preferred 16 gigs of ram?  This new Service Desk had better be pretty impressive.
