    Hello.

I just want to ask how to change maximum quarantine message limit in Brightmail 8.

I remembered in Symantec Mail for Security 5, that there was a hidden settings by pressing shift A in the settings tab to change the maximum quarantine message limit.
In Brightmail 8, how would I change that setting?

    TIA

In the same way that you used to do it in SMS SMTP 5.  Here is the previous forum thread that discussed this and lists the steps to do it:

Please note that newly released versioin 9 has a new quarantine feature that does not impose maximum message size limit.

On the Administration page, go to alerts, click in the blank area on the right, and hit SHIFT + A to get to the hidden config settings.  I saw someone post this question a few months ago, and the response was that you shouldn't do this, as it's not good practice.  I disagree for one specific use-case, which is the reason why I have made the change for our environement.

That reason would be, that if you use the gateway to safeguard you against email with zip file attachments.  We have it set so that rather than letting all emails with zip file attachments come in, or block them outright (which is what we used to do), they are posted in the user's quarantine, then the recipient is notified with a friendly message saying that they have a message with a zip file attachment.  I can tell you that its a fantastic way to manage emails with zip file attachments.  But of course, it requires that you probably need to increase the message limit in the quarantine.

Spam Quarantine enhancement is mentioned in the Release Notes for version 9 as follows:

    QUOTE:
Previous versions used a database for Spam Quarantine messages. In Symantec Brightmail
Gateway 9.0, Spam Quarantine messages are stored in the file system to make the message
    store more robust and scalable.
    UNQUOTE:

Please note that as a result of this enhancement, the previously hidden setting "Maximum message size allowed for spam (megabytes):" no longer exists.

    Hello Adnan,

Can you provide a link to the release notes?  ...My Gateway 8.x VM's notified me of an update available (9.0) but I didn't see a way to pull down any documentation about update considerations, new features, etc.

You can view the "Software Update Description (also known as Software Update Notes)" within the Control Center using the "View Description" button (Administration > Version > Updates).

This button will not be active if you did not see the new version in the Control Center.  In that case, you can make that button active by clicking "Check for Updates"  button to make the new version visible.  If this behavior sounds confusing, it's because of a new feature called "Staggered update notifications".  Here is the information about this feature in the release notes:

    QUOTE:
The Symantec Brightmail Gateway Control Center displays (and can deliver) update notifications
to customers when new software is available for download. Starting as a new feature with
Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0, Symantec has a rolling notification process. Customers are
incrementally notified of a new update over several weeks between the software release date
and the general availability (GA) date. If you learn of a new software update but have not received
a notification, you can check for an update before receiving an update notification. In the
Control Center, click Administration > Hosts > Version > Updates > Check for Updates. If an
update is available, you can download and install the update. Not receiving a notification right
away is not a problem, and there is no need to contact Technical Support.
