several questions - getting started

Hi:

I have several questions and was hoping someone could help me out.

1. I see an SVS agent in both NS and DS.  Which one am I suppoed to push out to my clients?  Does it not matter?  I have a training course book for NS and one for DS.  Since DS has a chapter about SVS, I'm assuming this is the one to use?

2. Is there a step by step guide (not covered in my book) to virtualizing an application, then deploying the virtualized application to an Altiris client using DS?

3. All of our clients (that I manage) are public use computers.  Any student can use any computer (we have about 7,000 students and over a thousand computers).  We don't allow roaming profiles so when the student logs off of a machine, his profile is deleted.  Am I going to run in to problems with SVS in my management scenario?  I need all settings reset upon logon.  I did see an Altiris paper on "Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 Logon Hook" and I'm assuming I'm on the right track with that.  Any more specific information regarding that subject would be hugely appreciated.

4. What's the standard practice for creating the virtualized applications?  Setup a clean machine to do the virtualizing?  Where do I get the SVS to do the capturing?  We purchased CMS Level 2.

Regards,
Mark

1) I think this is totally a matter of taste\preference so I'm not going to cover it much, though others here on Connect might be willing to share some thoughts.

2) Not that I'm aware up, though there could be something here on this site.

3)  Any changes made by an application that's virtualized are recorded in the layer's Writable Sub-Layer.  If you Reset the layer then this information is deleted.  The Log-on Hook can do this at log on time but it's not officially supported in 6.1 (though it should work--you just can't get Symantec Support to help you with issues around it) but it can significantly increase log-on time depending on how many layer's you've got that are being reset.

I, currently, prefer the method of having a service running in the background that watches for certain apps that I know are running from inside a layer (firefox.exe or winword.exe) and then we that application is closed the service resets the corresponding layer.  We've been using this in lab environments at conferences to a good deal of success.

4) There are several Virtualization best practice articles here on Connect, just run a search.
