sfha50MP3RP2a clarification needed

Can anyone tell me what the reason was for the release of version 'A' of RP2 for sfha-sol_sparc-5.0MP3?
All I can find in the README (https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo...)
is this note:

“This patch obsolete sfha-sol_sparc-5.0MP3RP2”

ALSO , the 'Read This First' does not contain a patchadd section for Storage Foundation for Oracle. I've tried to match the patches listed in table 1-29 with all the lists on pages 63, 70, 86, and 99, but none of them match. (I found the updated patchadd list in the LBN TechNote, but that's only for SF).

Seems that not a lot of thought was put into the ReadFirst doc - the VxVM patch (122058-12) is listed in all the sections, but this requirement is only listed under the RAC section:

"If you are installing patch 122058-12 on Solaris 10 Update 5, you must also install patch 128306-05 or higher."

Surely users that do NOT have RAC installed will not read these sections of the manual?

I have posted feedback to LBN TechNote (281987) a couple of days ago, but have not received any response (except for a 'thank you..')

Hello Marianne, Your query is

Hello Marianne,

Your query is very genuine, its not clearly documented & document surely needs improvement.

However what I understand with these conventions is, lets say a bug was found for which a fix was created which was incorporated in RP2, but later on some issue was found with the same fix or with the same patch they have added some more fixes then patch number might be same (for e.g 112211-05) but some new additions were made to that patch.

Surely this should appear in the read this first or readme doc of the patch (which currently) is not, I hope documentation team would be having a look on this...

Thanks

Gaurav

Hope this helps with your question!

I have some information for you that should help with your question.

The patch 5.0MP3RP2a is a stack patch release and has fixes for these products:

Veritas Cluster Management Console 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Cluster Server 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas File System 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation Cluster File System 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation for DB2 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation for Sybase 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Storage Foundation HA 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Volume Manager 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

Veritas Volume Replicator 5.0MP3 On Solaris SPARC

If you need the full stack of components download this patch: sfha-sol_sparc[x64]-5.0MP3RP2a (https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2520  https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2521 )

If you need VM only, download vm-sol_sparc[x64]-5.0MP3RP2b (https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2518  / https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2519/ )

If you need FS only, download: https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2416  / https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo/2413

More information for the full stack patch:

If 5.0MP3RP2 is not installed, 5.0MP3RP2a is the correct patch to install. Please read sfha_readfirst.pdf on the downloaded patch for more information which has details on what fixes are on RP2. Comparing to 5.0MP3RP2, the 5.0MP3RP2a only has an additional script “scripts/vxlustart”.

If you already have 5.0MP3RP2 you can just use this technote: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/334940.htm

to obtain vxlustart script.

Here is a note for the script:

"Special Install Instructions: If you are updating using Live Upgrade,  a new vxlustart

script is provided in scripts/vxlustart.  This should be used in place of script from

original installation media."

Also note from the LBN, there is a correction to the sfha_readfirst.pdf document:

In the upgrade procedures, the list of patches with the patchadd command for Storage Foundation on

Solaris 8, 9, and 10 SPARC is incorrect.

On pages 63, 70, 86, and 99, the patchadd command should be as follows:

* For Storage Foundation on Solaris 8 SPARC:

# patchadd -M patch_dir 122058-12 123200-05 123722-02 \

123823-05 139354-01 139356-02 139737-01 139739-01 \

139741-02 139742-02 139743-01 139744-01 140657-01 \

140661-01 141279-01 141745-01

* For Storage Foundation on Solaris 9 SPARC:

# patchadd -M patch_dir 122058-12 123201-05 123722-02\

123823-05 139354-01 139357-02 139737-01 139739-01\

139741-02 139742-02 139743-01 139744-01 140657-01\

140661-01 141279-01 141745-01

* For Storage Foundation on Solaris 10 SPARC:

# patchadd -M patch_dir 122058-12 123202-05 123722-02 \

123823-05 139354-01 139358-02 139359-02 139737-01 \

139739-01 139741-02 139742-02 139743-01 139744-01 \

140657-01 140661-01 141279-01 141745-01

(Currently, working to try to get this errata in the document itself)

Hope this helps with your question and the formatting of this reply works out!

Best regards,

Randy Roadrunner

Hi Randy, thanks a lot

Hi Randy, thanks a lot for the very detailed response.

If I compare the 2 README's for the SPARC version:
Rp2: https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo...
Rp2a: https://vias.symantec.com/labs/vpcs/vpcs/patchinfo...

The list of Patch ID’s appear to be identical ?
The only difference seems to be the reference to vxlustart?

We also need the patchadd list for Storage Foundation for Oracle. There is no list in the ReadFirst doc. If I compare the list in the LBN with table 1-29 in the ReadFirst, the list should be something like this for Solaris 10:
# patchadd -M patch_dir 122058-12 123202-05 123722-02 \
123823-05 139354-01 139358-02 139359-02 139737-01 \
139739-01 139741-02 139742-02 139743-01 139744-01 \
140657-01 140661-01 141279-01 141745-01

Plus these :
139362-01
139366-03
139367-02
139368-01

Could you please confirm?

We also need correction to the patch requirement for VxVM patch 22058-12: Required patch 128306-05 has been obsoleted by patch 138269-02 in November 2008, which (I JUST discovered) was again obsoleted by 141444-09 yesterday (13 Oct).

Yes this is correct.
