Hi ALL,

We are configuring a new backup environment on LINUX NBU 7.1.

We have 2 libraries and each have 10 drives in it.

I have 6 media servers and 1 master in cluster.

Now i want to have these 10 drives on each libray to be shared by y all media servers.

Can anybody please provide me the steps?

Quick Look Solution

Correct. If all media servers

Correct.

If all media servers can see the robot, there is is no way to choose Robot Control host. No way to tell which media server will be chosen as robot control host.

This is how I configure in a shared environment:
Start device config wizard and select the server that you want to be the robot control host (no other media server(s)). Configure this server only and allow the wizard to restart services/daemons.
Next, start wizard again, this time selecting robot control host as well as all media servers to config shared drives.

Read through section 4

Read through section 4 of NetBackup Shared Storage Guide  http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3659

In short:
Zone all drives to all media servers.
Only necessary to zone robots to one media server (can be master server).
Add Library Based Tape Drive and Shared Storage Option License on all media servers.
Check on master server that all media servers are 'Active for Disk and Tape' with 'nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose' command.
Run Device Config Wizard - select Robot Control Host as well as all media servers.

The first media server that

The first media server that is started will automatically become the SCAN host.

See 'About scan hosts' in SSO manual (link in my previous post).

You don't, NBU will sort it

You don't, NBU will sort it out.

The only adjustment sometimes suggested when there are many media servers, and I will admit to not knowing what this number is, but I suspect it is more than 6, is to set the 'scan ability' value of one server to 9, and the others to 5.

Persoanlly, I would leave it at defaults unless there is an issue.

I was hoping that this

I was hoping that this section in the manual would answer your question:

How the scan host is determined:
EMM determines scan hosts; a scan host may be different
for each shared drive. The first host in the environment to
come online with a non-zero scan ability factor is the initial
scan host for its drives.
To configure the scan ability factor of media servers, use
the nbemmcmd command. For more information, see
NetBackup Commands Reference Guide.

The scan host can change:
.....
....

The default 'scanability' for all media servers is 5.  I agree with Martin - leave NBU to manage this, unless you experience problems.
We have customers with more than 20 shared drives. Never had to 'fiddle' with scanability and manually trying to select Scan Host.

1. Master 2. Best to first

1. Master

2. Best to first select Master only. This will ensure that Master is Robot Control host.
Run Device Config Wizard again, this time selecting Master and all Media servers.

3. SCAN host has nothing to do with 'Reserved' host (host using tape drive). Please read section 'About Scan Hosts' again.
If it still does make sense, wait till all is configured. Run 'vmdareq' command (in volmg/bin) on master server when no backups are running and when backups are running. All will be clear when you see the output.

Example of vmdareq output:

Drive1 - RESERVED on Sun <date>
     media1 RESERVED SCAN_HOST UP
     media2 UP
     media3 UP
Drive2 - RESERVED on Sun <date>
     media1 SCAN_HOST UP

Drive3 - RESERVED on <date>

Why are you so concerned

Why are you so concerned about the scan host - leave NBU to it, it will work fine.

It's all exaplined in the SSO guide.

On the screen in the gui where you select the hosts to scan, select your media server(s) and just make sure you select the robot control host as well.

Then you first select the

Then you first select the media server only. Finish config and restart services/daemons - same as previous post where master server was selected.
Next, select robot control host and all other servers sharing the tape drives.

If only one server can see

If only one server can see the robot, then this will be the robot control host when the servers are scanned.  Perhaps Marianne knows something I don't (quite possible ...)  - I can only think scanning the RCH separately is required if multiple servers can see the robot.  However, as Marianne pointed out above, only one server should be allowed to see the robot at any one time.

If you want a media server to be the RCH, just configure the san so that only that media server sees the robot.

It makes the most sense for the master to be the RCH, as the master has to be available, then the RCH will always be available, if a media server is the RCH and goes down, the remaing media severs cannot function.

Yes the drives will be

Yes the drives will be configured also, unless you delect them.

2nd time, it will just reconfigure them.

When don't you just try it and see ...
