Does the new Portal Agent provide document level restores for the document libraries? Will the agent protect both SPS2003 and WSS2003 servers?

SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) 2003 agent protects SharePoint Portal Server version 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services on the Windows Server 2003 platform using Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers version.

You can use the SharePoint Agent to back up and restore SharePoint Portal Server 2003 farm components, which include:
- Configuration database
- Portal sites and their associated data (Content database/User Profile database/Services database/ Index databases/Team databases)
- Windows SharePoint Services sites and their associated databases
- Single Sign-on database
- Document Library Store (Web Storage System-based)
- Document Libraries (Web Storage System-based) Individual documents can be backed up from and restored to Web Storage System-based document libraries, or redirected to file paths.

We hope to have answered your query.

That's really disapointing to hear that version 10.0 will not support document-level restores from SQL based document libraries. This was functionality we were told by our account manager would be available immediatly upon 10's release.

Is this something that is planned in the immediate future, or should we be looking at other products for safeguarding SPS2003 content.

The SharePoint Agent that ships with Backup Exec 10.0 does give the ability to backup and restore documents, within the document libraries. Please see the Backup Exec manual for additional information.

The documentation for the SharePoint agent says "Additionally, to backup and restore individual documents in workspaces or backward-compatible document libraries, the account must be granted the Coordinator role in SharePoint on all folders to be accessed the workspace or document library." The Coordinator role does not exist in SharePoint Portal Server 2003. When I backup the farm, I do not get the ability to select individual documents. What missing?

The 10.0 SharePoint agent supports doc level backup/restore of SharePoint 2001 workspaces or SharePoint 2003 backward compatible document libraries (web storage system based). The 2003 backward compatible document libraries requires the backward compatible document library components to be installed (refer to SPS docs). The coordinator role can be assigned for a workspace (SPS 2001) or backward compatible document library (SPS 2003) via the web folder view of the document library. Currently, the agent does not support doc level backup/restore of SQL based document libraries.

All our doc. on SPS2003 are saved in SQL based doc librares.

Have Veritas plans for a agent which can backup/trestore doc. in SQL based doc. librares? And When?

Now I need to make a "shadow/second" server with the SQL-database.

Kind regards

The BE10 SharePoint Agent does not support individual document restores unless those documents were backed-up individually. I have not come across any backup software that does this yet. Speaking with a colleague from a company which deals solely in SharePoint and related software, he is nont aware of any other software which protects and restores with that level of granularity.

Regards the Windows Storage Server, there isn't a specific agent. It can be protected using either BE Server or a Remote Agent. The Advanced Open File Option can also be used depeding on what you have on the NAS. OFO may not be suitable for a library-type application but as a file-type server it would be fine.

There are two companies providing document, list and site level restores see more: www.commvault.com and www.avepoint.com

I really, really, really hope that Veritas will come with a solution for this, as a lot of my customers have chosen Veritas as their backup strategy. But with SPS 2003 Veritas doesn't have an acceptable solution... Several customers are reviewing products from the links above...
