Sharepoint-SQL Backups

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I just upgraded to BE 2012 SP2.  When I backup up my SQL server I receive a message that several databases did not backup because they are Sharepoint databases.

It states I have to back them up using the Sharepoint Agent.

I have two questions:

1.Do I backup the sharepoint resources on the Sharepoint server, the SQL Server, or both?

2.It will not allow me to backup these databases using the SQL agent.  How would I restore a missing or entire corrupt sharpoint sql database

To backup Sharepoint, you need the Sharepoint agent which will backup the entire Sharepoint farm.  The Sharepoint agent will also be able to restore individual Sharepoint items or the entire farm.

See my blog below on why you should not backup the individual SQL databases that make up the Sharepoint farm.

Although the blog is written with SAP in mind.  It is equally applicable to a Sharepoint farm which is spread over a couple of databases.

So as far as the restore goes.

I back the databases up using the sharepoint agent, and restoring that back will restore a missing or corrupt database the same as it would if I was backing it up with the SQL agent?

Yes.  It will also take care of transactions which spans multiple databases.
