Should i be cleaning up Uninstall & MSI Installer registry keys from my virtual package

Created: 06 Apr 2014 | 1 comment

Hi,

I'm a long time packager but new to creating packages within Symantec Virtual Composer.

Within old school package captures i would cleanup the below registry keys as new entries would be created by tools such as WPS.

My question is within Symantec Virtual Composer should i be cleaning up the below registry keys from my capture or should i be leaving them in? I know in doing so will obviously effect what the OS reports and what other apps will see as installed.

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\

- HKLM\Software\Classes\Installer\

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\

Cheers.

There is no specific answer that can be given as it depends on what your environment requires and what your audit tools look for.

As a matter of best practice, since a virtual package is basically a capture, then cleaning up entries that are not relevant to the operation of the software avoids package clutter. Of course it also depends on the software as some apps (Adobe iirc) put license information in the uninstall key so removing it entirely is not recommended.
