Skipped files on AOFO (VSS) Backup of Windows Server 2008 SP2 with Backup Exec 12.5 Rev 2213 (SP2)

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Immediately after installing Service Pack 2 (SP2) on our Windows Server 2008 x86/x64 servers, Backup Exec has started to skip two files during backups:

Backup- \\server\System?State
VSS Snapshot warning. File c:\windows\system32\drivers\s3cap.sys is not present on the snapshot.
VSS Snapshot warning. File c:\windows\system32\drivers\storflt.sys is not present on the snapshot.

Previous to Win2k8 SP2 these files either did not exist or were not skipped for not being present in the snapshot. We are running the latest and greatest version of Backup Exec (12.5 Rev 2213 [SP2, Hotfixes 322898, 324947, 317436, 325647), and the latest version of the agents have been pushed to the clients.

I have tried putting global excludes on those two files just in case it would help, but it has not.

Is anyone else experienced this since upgrading to Win2k8 SP2? Or does anyone know how I can correct it?

Thanks!

Hi Trafsta, I've just

Hi Trafsta,

I've just encountered the same problem now that we have started installing SP2 on some of our servers.

I believe it is similar to the problem encountered with slanaccel.exe file as part early releases of Hyper-V. Correct me if I am wrong, but the issue in a nutshell is that the registry says a service and a file exists, so the VSS services try to grab it - BUT an update (see links below) has disabled/deleted the file or otherwise made it obsolete or redundant. You can see how that might be an issue....

Please see these Microsoft articles for a bit more background...

Have fun, bye!

Having the same isolated issue

Hi Guys,

Having the same issue. The weird thing is that all 8 of my servers are running Server 2008 SP2, but I only get this issue on 1 of them. Has anyone made some headway on this?

Hi, Same issue and same

Hi,

Same issue and same circumstances.  In our case it is a 2008 virtual machine running under Hyper-V.  Could not find reference to the files in the registry.

I think the two missing files are from the previous version of Hyper-V Integration components which were updated in SP2.  Appears these files are now named to vms3cap.sys and vmstorfl.sys.  Being tired of the exceptions, I just made copies of those two files giving them the names it's looking for.

Until Symantec fixes this, at least I don't have to look at the same error every day!

Awesome workaround! I will

Awesome workaround! I will try this as well. The problem for me is also on VMs in Hyper-V, which are running SP2 and the latest integration components.

I will report back and let you know if this workaround works for me as well.

Hello Symantec ? - Have you found a fix, or ???

Hi There

Is DMB David's solution recommended by Symantec ? No question that it solves the problem but shouldn't the be a fix from Symantec now ?

Kind Regards

Kim

I can't find those 2 files.

I am currently having the same problem, but I can't find vms3cap.sys; vmstorfl.sys anywhere on C:.  Any other ideas?

Thank you.
