Slow authentication of AD Users on the DS Win32 Console

Hi

We use Altiris DS 6.8 SP1 in our environment. We also have many remote DS Win32 consoles installed. (eXpress.exe and other files are also installed locally on the machine)

Some users of those remote machines complain that when they open the DS Win32 Console that is locally installed on their machines the Console takes ages to load and it remains irresponsive. They complain that they can not work with such an irresponsive console.

The users belong to AD Groups which are authenticated to use the DS Console.

Other Users with the same AD Group membership has no issues opening the DS Console.

-What causes the authentication of the DS users to take so much time to accomplish?

-I have checked #AKB 38727 and AKB 39596 and have compared the listed Registry settings with those on the remote machines. LookUpGCForMembership and ADGroupNestingLevelTRegistry keys are not listed on their registry under: SOFTWARE\\Altiris\\eXpress\\console.

As an upgrade of our DS is currently not planned in the near future, I would like to ask whether you can help me on this issue.

Thank you in advance.

I've come across this same issue and found that in our environment it had to do with remote users (users at other locations coming across the WAN). Local site users had not problems. To get around this for the remote users, I enabled RDP and gave access to those users to RDP to either the server or another computer local to the server.

I have not seen any slowdown in any versions. We are currently running some 6.9sp1 and some 6.8sp1. I have my console strictly run via UNC \\servername\express\express.exe in a desktop shortcut. This is easy because it does not eat up an RDP connection to the server and is just as fast. You have to set up the background ODBC connection, of course.

Hi,

Thanks to you an to bhawver for your responses.

The weird thing on this is the fact that only this user with his account is facing this issue. When I open the DS Console with my account, or, another collegue with equivalent account opens the console the issue does not occur.

Could it be an issue with the profile of this specific user? would createing a new profile help?

Thanks

Couldn't hurt to try. You can either do that, or have that user log onto another machine as a test. This way you are not only removing the profile from being the problem, but the machine as well (as we all know that users tend to install things that may or may not conflict, I.T. users tend to install everything that may or may not conflict ).

We are having the same issues

We are having the same issues with users that do not have full admin rights with the DS Console. None of the users with Admin rights have the sluggish slow performance issues with the console.  Did anyone come up with any solutions to this?

Found the answer in KB44595,

Found the answer in KB44595, you need to either uncheck the Options -> Global -> Display only computers and jobs the user has rights to manage, or upgrade to 6.9 SP3.
