Slow Backup with 2 Drives and 2 Jobs

We have a Dell PowerVault ML6010 with 2 x LTO4 Drives.

Both are using the same firmware and the same symantec tape drive drivers.

We have 2 jobs setup to backup data from the same location but different folders. Both the jobs are backing up about 500GB each. They start at 3AM.

When we first installed the 2nd tape drive and setup the jobs they both finished within 5hrs both with job rates of around 3.5gb/min each. Now for some reason the first job runs at 3.5gb/min and completes within 5hrs but the 2nd job now goes much slower at about 1gb/min and takes 8hrs to complete.

Any help much appreciated.

Do you have Symantec Antivirus 10 on the server?  If so, you need to disable "Tamper Protection" and also in the "Advanced" options for auto-protect uncheck the Scan Files that are "Opened for Backup" setting.

Also, if you are running AOFO (advanced open file option) turn it off as it slows the backup down.

Thanks for the reply.

We have no Anti Virus running on the server doing the backup and AOFO is not enabled for both jobs.

Any further recommendations are welcomed. For the mean time I have started 1 job earlier than the other by an hour so they finish in a reasonable time but as soon as the 2 jobs are running one is always much faster.

I would next check all your SCSI and RAID controller drivers for updates (even firmware updates if available) and also make sure your tape drive has the latest firmware.  Then I would use the HP library tape tools diagnostic to measure the raw performance of the tape drives on both systems.  There may be some type os SCSI cabling/termination/configuration problem as well.

Marcrp - have you tried testing these jobs as both backup-to-disc.  I had this exact same issue and at first put it down to the SCSI card, tried all sorts to resolve it.

Eventually ran both backups as B2D (as well as a combiniation of B2D and to tape) and the issue was still there; whichever backup I started second would kill the speed of the first job.

I ended up running one drive off the backup server and attached the 2nd drive to another server I had available.  Obviously, you need a 2nd server, SCSI card and licence - so not an ideal solution.

I was running BE 10d on a PowerEdge 860 using a PowerVault 114T with two LTO3 drives.

See my thread here: https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?b...

Hope this helps you get further than I did!

Toma, GilesV thanks for the replies.

I will have a play about and see wether I can get anywhere. If I do I'll let you know.

For info though, our tape drives are connected via SAS to a Dell SAS 5/e card rather than a SCSI interface.
