Slow FT throughput

Hi All,

With reference to https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/ft-backup-speed-less

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I have a RH 6 box running 7.5.0.4 with QLE2562 HBA's thats showing the same issue.

I have test clients that can happily run LAN backups at 40-50 Mb/s, but i cant more than 20 Mb/s with SAN client.

I've changed FT buffers all over the place and its not made any difference. Null device tests on clients and media server show performance > 200 Mb/s should be possible :(

Any advice greatly apprieciated

What types of files are you performing backup of. FT and small files are not the best combination.

Assumption is the mother of all mess ups.

What ever we try to backup its slow (10-12 MB/S), be it large files or small files. We get the same performance to a /dev/null STU on the media server (it isnt the device we are using).

We can back the same data up at 40-60 MB/S over the LAN and were hoping for twice this with FT

We've tried swapping the HBA from a QLE 2562 to a QLE 2462, and forcing the SAN port speed for the target mode ports.

Any clues where else the issue might be would be appriciated.

Do you have any errors in the messages log? These will tell you if you are disconnecting from the SAN or not or are throwing errors. What driver (not firmware) levels are the HBAs on?

The above comments are not to be construed as an official stance of the company I work for; hell half the time they are not even an official stance for me.

The cards are on boot rom code 2.6 (2562) and 2.02 (2462).

The driver used is the win-jumbo one supplied with the NBU release (it unloads the qla24xx one in red hat as part of the install).

We get no error messages as the backups complete fine, just only at 10-12 MB/S

We tried fixing port speeds - but that made no difference.

Sorry, I should have specified "on the client" for this question.

I'll check - client is solaris 10 using emulex HBA's i believe

The clients are solaris 10 with Qlogic 2460 hba's

They are using driver version qlc-20110825-3.0.6

This is now with engineering, it appears from the logs that the FT clients or the FT server are sending constant (50/sec) device enquiries during the transfer.

We displayed this even when connecting a dedicated HBA to the FT ports via a cross over cable.

This is causing the transfer to slow (50 interrupts a sec!)

I'll update when we find a fix.
