SMC 7.1 Agent questions

Hello, and thanks in advance for any assistance....

***

Recently re-installed the SMC 7.1 platform, (new Servers) however, so much is not working.  First thing I want to review and nail down is the Inventory Solution/Clients  The older  NS server no longer exists...

I have many clients with the agents installed (7.1.6797) which I installed manually from a script..

(I used the OLD but still in use Deployment Solution to push to PCs)

******************

net use n: /DELETE
net use n: "\\ServerXYZ\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86\NS Client Package"
n:\AeXNSC.exe -s -a ns=ServerXYZ.XYZ.LOCAL nsweb=http://ServerXYZ.ECMC.LOCAL/Altiris NOSTARTMENU /s
net use n: /DELETE

*******************

If I run that on a fresh PC, it installs the Agent and only a handfull of SubAgents

Symantec Management Agent 7.1.13797.6797

Altiris Base Task Handlers 7.1.6797

Altiris Client Task Agent 7.1.6797

Inventory Rule Agent 7.1.6797

Software Management Framework Agent 7.1.6797

**** Notice the Inventory Agent is not there??  I have the policy on... and applied to "all computers without Inventory Plug-in"

Setting - Agents/Plug-ins - Discovery and Inventory - Windows/Unix/Mac - Inventory Plug-in Install

*********************

The second part of the problem is that there are older PC's with the Inventory Agent installed but it is not the correct version...  And those clients fail to work.

Altiris Inventory Agent 7.0.1085  And it should be at this version...(7.1.1043)

What is the best way to UPDATE all those with 7.0 to 7.1 ??

**  I can manually run this : BUT do I need to unistall the old agent first? And is there other logic..

net use n: "\\ServerXYZ\NSCap\bin\Win32\X86\Inventory\Agent Package"
n:\Symantec_InventoryAgent_x86.msi /quiet
net use n: /DELETE
exit

** Can I setup a new policy?  PC's with Altiris Inventory Agent 7.0.1085 uninstall then reinstall?  But this fails since I can't create a filter with that installed software..  So...  Anyways.. We bought Altiris to help with this...  and I am spending more time trying to figure this mess out and managing clients versus managing my computers...  Very fustrating.  Anyone have similar issues or able to talk to me for an hour or so So I can find a fix for this?  I want to use the SMC.

Settings | Agents/Plug-ins |

Settings | Agents/Plug-ins | All.

Make sure the "Install" tasks for each of the sub-agents/plug-ins you'd like to install are enabled (ie, "Discovery and Inventory | Windows/Unix/Linux/Macs | Inventory Plug-In Install."  I'd recommend also enabling the "Upgrade" tasks so that when you do an NS upgrade your clients automatically receive the updated plug-ins and are not mismatched from the NS.

Joe, Thanks, So the Inventory

Joe,

Thanks, So the Inventory Plug-In Upgrade was off, but that is because the "All windows/../ Requiring Inventory Plug-in Upgrade had a count of "0"

So, I went in and re-freshed that filter and it popped right up to 1222.  So, I have turned it on and will verify some results later on.  Much better than a "forced loginscript install"

SO...  that leads me into, why is that filter not refreshing?  And, what other sub-agents are not updating as well.

The more we dig, the more we learn...

If the filter is not

If the filter is not associated with an enabled policy, it will not refresh on the standard intervals.

My Screenshot... I assumed it

My Screenshot... I assumed it was setup properly?  And would not those 1222 PC's just start updating?

I can force them via scripts, (login or old DS console)  But honestly, this should work?

A few things

When a policy is disabled, the associated filter and target will not update.

Even though this policy is enabled, you have no schedule defined.  You should add a schedule using the Add schedule option then click Save changes.

You may want to consider Altiris training or reading some of the documentation, because topics like how policies and scheduling work, filters and targets, are pretty foundational to understanding the product.  With the basics mastered, the rest comes pretty easily.

Forgot to mention, that I

Forgot to mention, that I doubt that policy is working? Or updating?
