SMC.exe Runtime Error (AntivirusProduct line is missing)
Updated: 01 Oct 2010 | 8 comments
We have 30-40 machines getting the SMS.exe Runtime error. The temporary fix found in this thread below works but when the error returns and you try and use this fix a second time the AntiVirusProduct line on the Query Results screen, highlight AntivirusProduct is missing.

What seems to be causing this is the installation of the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (9.0.21022.08) that is part of a software install we have on all of our machines. What I am curious about is if this issue can be corrected by changing the way the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable installs, maybe specifying that DLL's arent overwritten?

Hi
What version of the client are you using?
Many of these issues can be resolved by simply upgrading to latest SEP release (11.0.5 in this case).

reinstall doesn't work for us....
We've removed software and reinstalled and also removed the AntiVirusProduct line from wbemtest Query Results screen but problem persists. We did find the issue stayed away for about a week. I think a reboot (or two) may cause the problem to come back - I know for a fact it was working for me on Thursday/Friday last week at one of my clients but failed this morning (the following Monday).
Have not tried removing the files and registry as per Aravind's response yet - I'm going to try that now.
Both machines I've had this on have been a SAV to SEP migration. Both clients running 11.05
I have a ticket open with support but so far they only suggested the wbem fix.
Unfortunately this is holding me up from rolling out 11.0.5 as I can't afford 100+ desktops to have this issue.
update - issue still occurring...
Just an update on this. We are still continuing to get this error after about 4 days. Dialog box comes up after user has logged in. Symantec's suggestion was to uninstall/cleanwipe and then reinstall in unmanaged mode off the cd. I did this and the problem went away (note I did no configuration of the client apart from install off the cd). After about 10 days I then copied sylink.xml down from the managed server and 5 days later the problem reoccured.
Are you getting an error with
Are you getting an error with the SMC.exe or is it something along the lines of SMC CMC has caused an error? Just curious...we seem to get alot of issues with the smc cmc portion of the product...
Hey Mike - no sms related
Hey Mike - no sms related errors but the issue seems to be the same - we get
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
When we're running unmanaged the scheduled scans are not configured so I really suspect its the scheduled scan (running overnight) that causes the problem. However why it takes about 4 days to start giving the error I don't know. As the message only shows when you login (and at that point it also restarts the symantec antivirus service, it's hard to tell exactly when the problem occurs. I'm also not sure if it only occurs if the scan runs when a user is not logged in.So far symantec haven't even asked me about what versions of the runtime I have on my machine(s).......They're also not sure what version of C++ they use....
For us the errors only appear
For us the errors only appear when an admin logs into the system, makes the users think that they aren't getting the error any longer, but they really are.
