SMCgui.exe crashes
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 8 comments
I've recently come across this issue with a few computers. After first daily domain login, SEP gui comes up with an error "Symantec CMC SmcGui has encountered a problem and needs to close"; has Debug or Close. Either option I choose the program dies out and Application Error apears. "The instruction at "06xaabce1d" referenced memory at "0x00000014". Ther memory could not be read." Afterwards the SEP restarts itself ands runs fine until the next day.
I thought maybe was something to do with the 256mb of ram on certian computer, yet began happening on other ones with 512mb and 1gig. They get the error either on Push or Pull. Even with completely open policies (nothing blocked) issue occurs. And server / workstations are not dying in the middle of the night or anyting like that.

I am having the same issue. I think it's related to the scan that is scheduled every night but that my laptop doesn't do until I log on in the morning. Doesn't seem to do it any other time.
FYI, I am running Vista Business on an HP Compaq 6715 with the HP ProtectTools that have Crendential Manager. The Crendtial Manager also stops working a short time after the error.
Rebooting fixes the issue until the next day.
Hello,
The Smcgui.exe and such crashes I have witnessed in my environment are a direct result of the Checkpoint VPN client being installed on the systems. I have a case with Support in which this issue was reproduced. It has not been resolved to this point. If you have the Checkpoint client installed I guarantee this is your issue, but you will not resolve it unless you either remove SEP or you remove Checkpoint. Today is 24 business days that Support has reproduced the issue. I received an email last Thursday 2/7 that said the issue would be resolved in a MR release in 10 to 14 days. That is the last info I have received................. :)
Is there any update regarding this issue? The chkdsk doesn't seem to work.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
Im actually having the same exact problems. This just started when MR4 went live on things.
For Vista, disabling the UAC should help.
For XP, Try adding the smc.exe and smcgui.exe to DEP.
We've been on MP4 for a while, this just started happening within the last few days. Could this be related ot a bad definition release? Clients were not doing this earlier in the week.
