  • 1.  SMP 7 Database Trashed - Going to completely reinstall

    Posted Jan 24, 2011 11:11 PM

    Hey guys,

I've currently got a massive issue regarding my SMP 7 installation and the database is in extremely bad shape. After dealing with level 3 tech support for the past 1.5 months I've decided that it's just going to be quicker / easier to start over. I've not really implemented this to the fullest yet so I figured  now would be better than later.

Few things I'd like clarification on:

1 - If I keep the same IP address / server name of the main NS server, will the clients connect back to the server without issue?

2 - Does the above also work for the 2 task servers that I have installed, or will I need to reinstall those also?

I'm not too worried about the data that is currently in the database, that will all rebuild with time... I just can't go on beating my head against a wall anymore.

Thanks guys...hoping I'll stop losing my hair now.

As far as i know, the server name and the alternate URL are stored on an XML file in the Altiris agent directory, so if you rebuild the server with the same name and same IP, all your clients will recognize him as their NS server.

The task server is just an agent with some specific plug-ins so it will work in the same way (don't forget to recreate the Sites in the console)

Never tried it though, hope this helps.

P.S.: If this works please let the community knows about it.

    1. Yes, the clients will reconnect and create a new record in the database if the name stays the same. The IP address doesn't matter as long as the clients connect to the FQDN of the server of course.
    2. I would reinstall the site servers as well or you could add them again as site servers in the site servers settings page.

Is it an option to wait for the 7.1? There are a lot of fixes and performance tweaks in there. It should come out in March somewhere I believe.

To install 7.1 you will need a Windows Server 2008 R2 as Management Server.

Hmmm that could very well be an option, especially with it coming out in March... This is the first I've heard about the requirement for Windows 2008 R2 support! Nice to see they are finally forward thinking in their adaptability!

In theoy it will be that simple; however, there are few things to keep in mind...

    1. BACK UP ALL CUSTOM WORK! (Tasks, reports, views, etc...)

    2. Install the SAME solutions as your original implementation.  Install Agents will still have policies from the policies it knew about.  If the same solutions are not installed then expect your EVT\BAD folders to fill up quickly.  I'm not sure if it's the same case for NS 7.x, but in NS6.x you needed to have the same solution version in order for the rebuild to work properly.

    3. You may have some issues with any replicated jobs and tasks to the site servers, just make sure to check functionality of your packages and tasks.
