  • 1.  SMP 7.1 Org Architecture by Department with Servers Separate

After going through numerous KB articles and forum posts, just wanted to validate my (mixed up...heheh) thoughts.  I had set up the collections on my Altiris 6 server by department for the most part so wanted to do the same with SMP 7.1.  We're not using Altiris to manage servers at this point in time but figured if we did so in the future, I don't want my help desk staff accessing them so best to architect this possibility into my SMC now.

Would it be preferable to create an "Organizational View" then make "Workstation" and "Server" organizational groups within it and create org groups for each department within the Workstation group to manage our resources?  Figured I'd give help desk access to the Workstation group and only Symantec admins would have rights to the Server group.  Or...would it be better to create 2 org views; one for workstations and another for servers?

What I don't like about SMP is that org group membership isn't dynamic where it appears I'd have to utilize Automation Policies to automatically move newly discovered computer resources into the appropriate groups.  I'm wondering whether I should forego creating departmental org groups altogether and use filters instead for each department?  Coming from an Altiris 6 world, I swear this new SMP architecture confuses the heck out of me so I'd appreciate any comments you may have.  Thanks in advance!

Did no one respond because it doesn't really matter how I architect my SMP infrastructure?  Perhaps there's enough flexibility to do whatever?
