  • 1.  SMP 7.5 SP1 HF3 Stable?

Any feedback from those running this latest release and hotfix?  My production server's only at 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 where upgrading my test SMP 7.1 VM to 7.5 SP1 HF3 went smoothly about a week ago.  However, yesterday my vSphere client reported that my VM had high CPU usage (eventengine.exe) and couldn't grab an IP address.  Getting into the VM's console, everything was super slow (even logging in) and objects in the Windows GUI weren't updating or working at all with multiple errors and multiple Altiris services not starting.  Rebooting didn't help where Windows was pretty much useless and unresponsive.

CPU usage has gone down this morning after a few reboots although most of the Altiris services still have failed to start.  Now that the server's more responsive, I'm repairing some programs like VMware Tools, SEP, and even ran "sfc /scannow" which found no problems.  I'll have to comb through the Windows event logs for clues on why this all happened although this catastrophic failure doesn't give me a good feeling about upgrading to 7.5 SP1 HF3.  Perhaps this was a glitch in our Vcenter environment where I may not have the same problem on my physical SMP box so that's why I'd like your feedback on your experiences with 7.5 SP1 HF3.  Thanks in advance!

I went from 7.1 SP2 MR1.1 to 7.6 SP1 HF3 with no significant problems. I did have to change the region format for the Service account ("App identity"): http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH226615 You have to run a Patch Import after upgrading for Patch to work properly.

Thanks for the feedback!  Unlike me, I take it you did this upgrade more than a week ago?

I'm kind of suspecting my test server freaked because of a VMware issue.  We've been experiencing a problem whereby random VMs that have static IPs show a 169.xxx... address in vSphere where VMware KB articles pointed to a problem in an older ESX version.  However, the host that my VM is on is running the latest 5.5 release so not sure what's going on.  Bouncing the VM's NIC connection in the OS usually does the trick but never has CPU usage been so high that I can't really do anything in Windows.

Anyway, knock on wood, my server's still behaving itself this morning where I noticed yesterday that SIM is now reporting the availability of HF4.  Have yet to check its release notes but thinking maybe I should just chance it on my test server after what happened to it.  Anyone take the HF4 plunge yet?

Clint, if you ever see high CPU usage for eventengine.exe process could you please gran a full memory dump of that process? You can use Task Manager or better procdump.exe from sysinternals, this utility can monitor the process and create the memory dump once CPU usage is higher than the set value.

Then please share the dump on some internet server so I could download it.

    thanks!
