  • 1.  SMP7 Replicate installed software UP the hierarchy

I have 2 NS7 servers, both CMS.  Parent also has CMDB.

From Manage -> Software-> Installed Software on the parent, I have 623 software resources listed
From Manage -> Software-> Installed Software on the child, I have 13914 software resources listed

The point of hierarchy and replication is to centralise reporting and certain aspects of management.  But in this case, with out of box replication rules, I am not seeing Installed software data being replicated upwards and consolidated centrally. Yes, I have added Inventory Solution software data class replication rules per the KB (UP).  But I understand that Software Management Solution is responsible for populating the "Installed Software" list.  So it's obviously not making its way up the hierarchy.

What classes do I need to replicate upwards to get this working?  And more importantly, is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do this?  Any dangers I need to be aware of?

    Hi Wallo

I'm finding myself in the exact same dilemma. Did you work it out? And how?

Out of the box when you implement Hierarchy it does not replicate installed software. You need to enable replication of this information by replicating up on each child notification server. Inventory is responsible for this information and the replication of it. By default it is not switched on - you need to ensure that under Replication you have the "Inventory Data classes-Software Data Classes" checked. This will allow your software data to be replicated to the parent server. In large environments this could take a number of days to replicate. Further you need to check that replication is completing successfully. If the replication does not complete successfully this is an indication of issues outside of this and you should open a ticket with support to resolve the issue.

I just re-read you question - were did you apply the change "Inventory Data classes-Software Data Classes" was it on all child NS's??

"Inventory Data classes-Software Data Classes"  is enabled and applied at toplevel - direction UP, and is replicated to - in my case - both childs NS's

Thanks for the response Steve, unfortunately it's not the solution.

We're already replicating software inventory up, and that works fine.  Unfortunately, we want to populate the software library-installed software list on the parent so that when you add a package to the library on the parent, you can match up to an existing one.

I logged a ticket and was advised that this scenario is not supported, fullstop end of story.  Very disappointing because I don't know why you wouldn't want to do things this way.

It means that if a customer has a hierarchic environment, they cannot go to the software library\installed software list on the parent and actually see what's installed across their fleet of computers.  They have to use the old standard inventory reports instead.

Basically, when you go to the child NS's software library\installed software list, you get about 20 thousand entries.  On the parent, you only get about 200 or so, because it's only listing the software installed on the NS and its site server.

Perhaps a useful inclusion for 7.1?  I did ask the support guys to tag it as a feature request but I don't know if it went anywhere.
