You'll need to make sure that the Software Contract is assigned to the location where it is being used. Then, you could write a report that will merge the compliance data for Software Products based on the location of the computer they are installed on, and the contract to that Product at the same location.

Of course this would require a custom SQL report.

You may be able to get the something close using the Software Compliance IT Analytics Cube.

I wish I could pose a solution for this but I simply wish it add a comment I hope the developers see.  Maybe someone can suggest how to better get suggestions to developers.  The problem with the suggested custom report is I cant keep writing custom reports every time I wish Altiris did something I think it should be doing in the first place.  Such as Licensing based on all license types, such as license compliance by location.  Sure its nice I can write a custom report because its open system. but  I cant have 20 custom reports for my bosses to read all the time.  They want to see the "Compliance Report"  Not the compliance report that is missing information or wrong information and be told to be sure to look at the other report for correct information. the licensing portion of altiris has been around long enough that it should be a lot more mature but I what I'm seeing is only attempts to add features, not benefits.

If you use IT Analytics has the report that you are looking for.   Software License Compliance by Location.  It also has it by Department and Cost Center as well.

If you are not using it I would look into it. It will help you so you dont have write some custom reports in most cases.

Brillow32473:

I just ran the report you suggested and it does not report compliance.  It only reports Licenses.  It doen't show any licenses installed because Altiris reports on "Software Products"  Secondly, why in the heck do I have to pick a month?  Why is the last month I can pick July 2012?  Third, the numbers it reported for the test group I set up wasn't even correct. I would expect the # to be the same as the Symantec reprot "software license compliance." report if I select all locations.  It wasnt.  Forth, in order for this to work I have to go back and set up up all new software Licenses, and purchases for every software that I want to divy up between locations and assign them to locations.    In short another few 100 hours of something I'm bleeding hours into on the 7.1 product.  I could go on but I think you get my point.

I appreciate your effort.  I am not sure of your position within the company but imporvments are best implimented when real world problems are solved.  Within my group of contacts in my community I don't know anyone who has gotten Altiris 7.1 to preform to its promised capabilites as it relates to software/license/contract mangement.

Hello,

Please refer to new article published by me (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/asset-management-solution-7x-how-track-software-location). After creating report 'by provided query in the article', you can be able to track software with respect to location and also with total usage count . I hope that this report will help you in resolving your query.

Thanks,

~Abhishek

This process and report is exactly what I was looking for.  Thank you.  However as usual I’m having a little difficultly.  I did some testing and I can’t seem to get anything newly entered purchases to show up in different locations.  This is what I did:

I’m using for my test Software Product “adobe acrobat professional 7”

I have 3 purchases of 10, 20, and 30 each at location “east”  bought at different times.  They are tied to the license “adobe pro 7” and “adobe pro 7 upgrade” both licenses are associated to the same software product “adobe Acrobat professional 7”

So when I run this report I get three different lines showing the correct software product, the same location but different compliance numbers.

Second problem, I have when I added a new purchase and associated it to a new location “West” and associated that purchase to the same License, I do not get a new location in the report.  I checked my regular Software License Compliance report and the new purchased licenses are calculated there and showing up.  So any idea what I’m doing wrong?

So I’m not sure I know what I’m doing wrong or is there something wrong with the way I’m adding software purchases. We have to create new software purchases because of a, the upgrade process doesn’t work correctly, and b, we have to track separate purchase for separate locations.  So I don’t think that’s the issue.

Thanks for your feedback. Created query will work perfectly if there will be only one software purchase assigned to the Software Location.

Thanks for providing scenario/example of multiple software purchase. Query needs to be modified to support this case also. Will work on it and will reply you back with the updated query.

For the second problem mentioned by you, it seems to be you have not assigned ‘West’ location to the managed computers. Please make sure that you have also executed ‘Software product recalculation operation task’ before checking the report.

Thanks,

~Abhishek
