  • 1.  This software requires the Mac OS X BSD package

I'm having trouble installing SEP on my Macbook Pro (model identifier: MBP6,2) running 10.6.8.  Install packages for version 11.0.6300, 11.0.7000, and 12.1 all fail with the same error. The error is documented in Symantec's KB (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137364), however, the solutions suggested haven't worked.  I've verified and repaired the hdd.  I've repaired permissions multiple times.  No dice.

I support SEP for my university, so have had several different versions installed previously.

I'm aware that an archive install of Mac OS 10.6 will most likely fix whatever it is the installer is failing on.  I'd prefer to avoid that if possible, since nothing else is wrong with the system.

Anyone else run into this error and have additional troubleshooting advice?  Anyone know exactly what it is that the installer is checking for?

This might be a shot in the dark, but ave you tried removing and reinstalling Liveupdate?

    Let me know the outcome.

LiveUpdate isn't really separately uninstallable and reinstallable (at least not without effort). It's delivered with the SEP installer metapackage. I would seriously doubt this is related. In a nutshell our installer can't detect that BSD is present and installed.

The system's install.log is where SEP writes install info--there may be more info there, but I suspect there may be OS problems. sad

No OS problems. At least not ones related to the BSD subsystem. That's part of my frustration with the error message--I couldn't even be attempting to install SEP if the BSD subsystem was really missing or damaged, it's fundamental to a working OS.

Thanks for the reminder to look at the full install.log, though.  Turns out the installer is checking for the existance of /Library/Receipts/BSD.pkg which I had moved while troubleshooting a different problem.  Moved it back and the SEP installer ran just fine.

I'm glad that it ended up being a relatively painless fix for you. The SEP installer could not find the installer receipt for BSD, thus concluded it was not installed.

Edit: Your situation is probably not a common one, but I am going to update the document to mention the installation receipt.
