Solaris 10 x86_64 or SPARC for the master/EMM Server?

Hi,

our master server needs to be replaced this year. At the moment we're running our environment on a Sun V490 with 8 CPUs. The big question is, if we should stay on SPARC or change to some x86-Hardware. The reason for thinking about the x86 is the EMM/Sybase component on the masterserver, which is said not to be multithreaded. So maybe a fast Opteron might improve the performance on this part.

What are your thoughts about this? Have you any experiences?

What about a combination of both, like running the master on the existing SPARC hardware and only moving the EMM to a different server?

Regards
Frerk

I guess I just prefer Solaris

I guess I just prefer Solaris on Sparc for my master.  I just feel like it works better and is more stable, but I'm sure there are many who would disagree. We've experimented with non-sparc media servers which seem to work ok for the most part. Our few attempts with non-sparc masters for various reasons didn't end up working out. If you do go with the x86 hardware just make sure you don't skimp on it.
