Notes don't say much about that . Also, who has more details on the licensing changes ? ITS does not have any news on those changes and we would like to reflect them in our AUP
From the documentation, Workflow only requires NS 7 and licensing if you are creating processes that tie into Altiris. If you are creating process that don't interact with Altiris, no licensing it required.
The only way to get WF 7 is through SMP 7, so you shouldn't ever be caught with WF 7 without SMP 7. The documentation describes 2 available license levels - PAS and basic WF 7. PAS can integrate only with the Altiris solutions, and the basic WF 7 license can integrate with the Altiris solution and non-Altiris solutions. So, actually you need less license to interact with Altiris.
After the trial license expires WF 7 will not work at all.
Hi, don't forgot to change the filter list from "suite" to "solution" ;-) If you want any chance to see the Workflow one.
Funny: If you go on Symantec.com Trial download page, you still got version 6 & product page is not updated to 7th version !
Does the Symantec IT developpers go quicker than the sales departement ???
Ususally we hear about an Altiris product 1 or 2 years before the launch (like Service Desk 7: That is the record, near 3 years ?)
thanks a lot for the info Stuper ;-)
We have been waiting on few things to start looking at SMP 7
Service desk 7(august hopefully)- We will still need to find away to make service desk 7 work with NS 6 for inventory info
Workflow 7
AMS 7 (soon)
Support for internet management in CMS(next year)- this is the main driver for our workstation group so they are not looking to upgrade until next year
Does WF7 require you to have a Altiris agent pointing to the SMP7 for posting to the WF7 server and to use Designer ? If so this is a big problem since we will still have all our clients altiris agents pointing to a NS 6 server.
No, you do not need to have the NS7 agent on you computer or any other computer for that matter.
The only place you will enter the NS7 data is in the Notification Server Credentials Tool. The Server and Designer all get their license data from the NS7 server, so you have to have it defined as the default NS in the credentials tool.
This has no effect on your access to your current NS server. I have a rather extensive NS6 infrastructure, and only have an NS7 server for the express purpose of licensing the Workflow.
I still access the NS6 server for tickets, resources, etc...
Rob thanks for the info, how did your upgrade go ? do you think the changes in the new version is worth upgrading now or waiting . We are in the middle of building a few larger process and want to see if it worth upgrading now instead of upgrading them again later
So far I think is it worh the upgrade. There are some new Webform features that are pretty neat, and most importantly the Process Manager Portal is now able to validate against multiple Domains and Forests. This was the biggest stumbling block for us with 6.5. And maybe it's just the "newness" factor, but it does seem faster to me.
Upgrade went ok, just make sure you upgrade your projects first so you can re-publish them right after the server upgrade. I did an un-install of 6.5 first, re-boot, then installed 7. That seemed to work better than an upgrade in place.
Now I'm working on getting a 64 bit OS set up so I can migrate to that. WF7 is supposed to be 64 bit optimized, so I'd like to take advantage of that extra power and speed.
Yeah, i plan on creating a Dev server first before doing production .. 64bit Dev server .. I'm looking forward to trying to use some of the reporting services that got added that are also part of service desk 7 .. I hope you can use them to run reports on all different parts of processes and data in your workflows . I wish we had a details list of all the additions to WF7
Should we install NS7, we have NS6 with the helpdesk solution 6 purchased Workflows what is recommended since Service Desk 7 is not really available I am confused.
In our environment, we implemented NS7 on a seperate box. All clients and solutions are still pointed to the 6.5 box. 7 is simply there to handle licensing for the Workflow server until we decide to move everything over to 7. This also gives us some time to explore the new NS and get comfortable with it before diving in head first. If you can spare the hardware, or a VM, I would highly recommend taking this route. As far as Workflow 7 goes, I think it is worth the upgrade. As Rob stated, it does feel a little faster. I'm also pumped about the changes to the Active Directory components. From what I understand, the guy who developed the Incendio AD components is now working for Symantec so now the built in components aren't as wonky as they were in 6. Getting the process manager is another nice feature of going to 7. We have yet to start using it but I see that changing as our company starts to adopt Workflow.
Workflow 7.0
Workflow 7.0 did release.
Release notes Altiris KB article # 46298
7.0 documentation here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/documenta...
FYI: does it require NS 7.0 to install it ?
Notes don't say much about that . Also, who has more details on the licensing changes ? ITS does not have any news on those changes and we would like to reflect them in our AUP
Workflow 7.0 Download
Where do I download Workflow 7. I went to to the documentation website and click on downloads but Workflow 7 was not in the dropdown list.
Please ingnore
I found it and i'm just posting this so I don't get notified anymore.
Install guide should have the information
Check out the install guide here: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/documenta...
WF does require NS (SMP) 7.0 for licensing.
Licensing
From the documentation, Workflow only requires NS 7 and licensing if you are creating processes that tie into Altiris. If you are creating process that don't interact with Altiris, no licensing it required.
Is that true?

Do you not have access to SMP 7?
Where to download Workflow 7 trial
Is Workflow 7 already available for download?
Yes
Available through Symantec Installation Manager. ftp://ftp.entsupport.symantec.com/pub/support/documentation/Workflow%207.0%20Installation%20Guide.pdf

RE: NS7 Questions
Hi Jeanne,
Here are a few items you may want to kick around in helping you decide if you want to go with 7.
I'm normally in the IRC Chat (Channel: #Altiris) with the same if you have more questions or would like to discuss this a bit more indepth.

anyone start looking at using the cube reports in WK7
I installed WF7 but was wondering if anything started playing around with the Cube reports to see how you could use these for different workflows ?
