Span volume issue using Ghost 8.0

  • 1.  Span volume issue using Ghost 8.0

    Posted Apr 10, 2008 02:23 PM
Hello.  I currently have a boot CD built using www.netbootdisk.com.  I use the CD to boot our computers to a Windows 2000 domain where it maps a single drive letter to a Windows 2003 server.  The ID I use has full rights to the domain and mapped drive.  When I try to ghost an image to the server it of course wants to span the image when it gets to the 2GB mark.  Unfortunately I get the following error when it gets to that point.

    Span Volume [2] Done (1658
Symantec Ghost needs to create a new image span.  Please either choose Browse to select a new drive and filename, or insert new disk and choose OK.

If you choose OK  or Browse and try to create a file you get the following error:

    Usage Error 10032
    Disk is full, cannot continue

There is over 250GB of free space so this the disk is not full.  I did notice that it does create the .gho file and then the 1st spanned .ghs file but the .ghs file is 0kb.

I have tried imaging to an NTFS and FAT32 volume.  I have tried using all of the following switches:
    -auto
    -span
    -or
    -fni
    -ntil
    -quiet
    -split=<size in MB>

I am able to use a different boot disk and ghost images to a Novell server with no issues.  It automatically creates and names the spans.  When I boot from the CD and create an image to a 2nd hard drive I also have no problems.  It has something to do with the Windows 2003 server or the domain environment.  I am unable to figure it out though.  We are in the process of ordering the newest version of ghst but it takes a very long time to get anything approved here no matter how inexpensive it is.  If you have seen this issue or have any idea I would appreciate the help.

    Thanks all.

    Hi,

It looks like no free space is reported when Ghost try to create the new span. If you use a smaller size for the split parameter (something like 1000MB instead of 2000MB) would it make any difference?

Usually mapped network drives always report 2GB free space under DOS if it has more than 2GB. If you give the dir command after the failure, how much does it show?

Is there a solution for this?  I am getting the same issue.  I am attempting to ghost the image of a GX755, XP Pro, to a network server and around 60% or so I get 'Span Volume (2) Done (1658), needs to create new image span'.  This server has over a 100gb free.  If I look at the dir under dos, it shows over 2gb free, so I'm not understanding why this is not working.  I am about to pull my hair out, PLEASE help!

We purchased the newest version of Symantec Ghost and everything works correctly now.  I believe we have Symantec Ghost Suite 2.5.  Also created a new USB Boot stick that we use now.  Never did find a way to use the older version of ghost with the boot disk we had work correctly.  Sorry I could not helpout more.

It's just weird that it's doing this now.  We've been using Ghost 8.0 for several years now and I have never had this issue.  I have sent images from the 755 to the network before and did not receive this message.  It has been giving me fits all week.  I am also using the netbootdisk as my 755 boot disk refuses to work anymore, so I'm not even using a ghost boot disk per se.  I map to a network drive and run ghost from there and until this week, it had been a pretty good thing.

    Hi,

Since it was working OK, driver should be good. Other thing to check is the share you use. In case if the share server becomes loaded, response time may increase over the timeout. Things could happen with hot fixes too.

Could you try a different share?

Well I just tried sending the image to a different share on a different server and received the same message at about the same point.  This time it does give the name for the second span but when I hit ok it tells me the disk is full, and there is over 73gb free on the server.  And yes, the switches for auto spanning and naming are already chosen so I don't even know why it asked me if I wanted to span, it should have done that on it's own.

    Hi,

I can't still think of a reason why this started happening suddenly. However, info in your last post suggests that it could be specific to this particular machine. Could you try this operation with a different machine to see if it is actually specific to this machine?

In order to span correctly, Ghost should know exactly how much data was successfully written to the span. Under some situations, Ghost disable the spanning if it cannot find out the exact amount of data written. What happens is some shares just say the write failed even when it was a partial failure in which case, Ghost does not know where to start the next span.

In this case, the same thing may be happening for some reason. Could you try specifying the -split switch with a value less than 2 GB?

Well after all the research I have done, it looks like an issue with the 755 and ghost 8.0.  others report having the same issue but if they used version 8.2 or even an older version like 7, there was no spanning issue.  At this time, I am just going to quit as the machine I was trying to image from has to be put in service and I have no more time for this.

Guess it's just time to get them to upgrade our Ghost for these newer machines.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi,

It is not a bad idea to upgrade since there are many machines and OSs that may not work in 8.0 environment. However, still I can't understand why it started giving this problem suddenly, since you could use these machines with 8.0 in the past.
