  • 1.  Spanned image corrupted after editing in Ghost Explorer

    Posted Feb 16, 2009 02:44 PM

    I am using GSS 2.5 11.5.0.2141.

I captured an image using spanning of 638MB, old naming convention and compression of 5 (using these advanced options -cns -split=638 -z5) in Ghost console. These are the same settings we have been using in GSS2, GSS2.1 and GSS2.2

    First thing I notice it ignored the -cns option ( filename.gho , filename.001, filename.002, filename.003, etc) instead it gave me filename.gho, filename001.ghs, filename002.ghs, etc.

Then I tried to edit the image using Ghost Explorer.

Ghost explorer then prompted me for all of the ghost files (last spanned file, 3rd spanned file, 2nd spanned file, etc) - weird?

Then I wanted to remove a file in the image (c:\program files\symantec\ghost\dnscache.txt)

    Then I exited Ghost Explorer.

Then I went back into Ghost Explorer - "Not a Ghost image file"

I tried using -ignoreindex and -corrupt - no luck

I tried using -split option as specified in the Implementation Guide:

If Ghost Explorer reports that a spanned or split image is corrupt without
prompting for the second part of the image, it may not recognize that the image
is split. Starting with the -split argument forces Ghost Explorer to treat an image
    as a split image.

    No Luck

Luckily I made a copy of the original, I retried the same steps, but this time before exiting I compiled to a new location. The new compiled image opens fine, but the original is still corrupted.

    Help...

    Hi Mark,

The -CNS with Ghost Cast Server is a known issue and has been fixed, but was not included in the last live update (LU3). To obtain the fixed version please PM me you details (though I am on leave till next Monday NZ time) and I'll get in contact with you.

The other issue of Ghost Explorer corrupting your image is definitely a bug and thanks for reporting it. GhostExp doesn't handle the situation of an image which has 3 or more spans located in more than 3 separate places. For you this was exploited by the GhostCast -cns bug as GhostExp looks for the spans in the cns format as the actual image thinks they are in that format.

    There are two workarounds:

1). Rename all the spans into CNS format and GhostExp will open and edit it fine.

2). Open the image with GhostExp but do not select the last span as it asks, instead select each span in sequence until you reach the last span. If you accidentally miss a span quit and start again do not edit the image if you have missed a span selection.

    Regards,

    Morgan

I renamed the (already corrupted) files but didn't seem to work.

I still get "Not a Ghost Image file"

Just curious is there a way to fix the already corrupted files?

Not really an issue for me, but might be for future readers. :smileywink:
