We are about to purcahse BE11d. We are running Windows 2003 Servers and will have two applications that use SQL Express on two different servers. Will we need to purchase the SQL Agent to back up these databases, or can it be done without the agent? If we need the SQL Agent, do we need two licenses or just one? Thanks.

Yes I believe you do, and you'll need two licenses. That is unless you use SQL Express's own internal backup functionality to produce a flat file backup of your databases which you can then backup like any other normal file.

In fact there seem to be a lot of DBA's on the net who for various reasons prefer to let SQL handle it's own backups, and then only use Backup Exec to backup the resulting file to tape afterwards. If you do a search for MSDE backup on Google you'll see a lot of posts / articles on the subject, including peoples reasons for and against the various options.

If you are backing up 2 SQL servers then you will require 2 licenses in that case

Thanks

Is the same SQL Agent used to backup SQL Express and MSDE?

Yes, the agent is the same: Backup Exec 11d agent for SQL Server (to be activated in the media server).

Bith SQL 2005 Express and MSDE are supported

Hello,

You need to install the same License key and install the agent on the remote server..

Thank you,
