SQL and Sharepoint databases on one server

Created: 19 Jun 2013 • Updated: 07 Jul 2013 | 2 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I need to do log backups of the SQL databases, Sharepoint DBs require simple recovery. I tried to create separate jobs, but the Sharepoint DBs show up in the SQL server list checked and grayed-out so you can't deselect them. The job randomly fails or has "exceptions" due to the sharepoint stuff.

I'm also concerned that, if I ever have to restore a server it will fail for lack of the other server being associated with the same backup job being restored. But I figure I'll try to get the backup running succesfully before I test restoring a successful backup. Because that's how I roll.

Anyone seen similar, find solutions to the shared SQL server problem?

Do you have a Sharepoint agent and is backing up your Sharepoint farm using the Sharepoint agent?  If so, when you need to restore Sharepoint data, restore them using the Sharepoint agent.  Don't restore the individual SQL databases.

As for your SQL databases, you need to back them up using the SQL agent and restore them using the SQL agent.

Just to add to pkh's valid answer - Sharepoint related SQL database are greyed out against the SQL agent selections because they have to be backed up using the Sharepoint Agent settings via the farm object
