SQL Backup on two-node cluster with multiple instances

Created: 14 Mar 2013 | 3 comments
Hello.

So, I got thrown into the Netbackup area (which isn't a bad thing.  I like the challenge, but...) and have been trying to clean up our policies, etc.  I'm having issues with out SQL cluster right now.

Our set up is basically:

VirtualClusterName     x.x.x.10
ClusterServer1           x.x.x.1
ClusterServer2           x.x.x.2
Instance1\SQL1         x.x.x.3
Instance2\SQL2         x.x.x.4
Instance3\SQL3        x.x.x.5
Instance4\SLQ4        x.x.x.6

We currently have 4 separte jobs set (one for each instance).  This is a lot of administrative overhead.  I'd like to be able to just create one job based on the Virtual Cluster Name and have it figure out what node it's on and grab it.  Everything I've tried so far has failed.  My latest thought is something along these lines, but I'm sure I'm way off base.

OPERATION BACKUP
DATABASE $ALL
SQLHOST "VirtualClusterName"
SQLINSTANCE "Instance1"
SQLINSTANCE "Instance2"
SQLINSTANCE "Instance3"
SQLINSTANCE "Instance4"
NBSERVER "NetBackupServer1"
MAXTRANSFERSIZE 6
BLOCKSIZE 7
BROWSECLIENT "SQL1"
BROWSECLIENT "SQL2"
BROWSECLIENT "SQL3"
BROWSECLIENT "SQL4"
NUMBUFS 2
ENDOPER TRUE

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

There have been similar requirement and discussions to reduce manual overhead/administration . However With Clustered deployment it is not possible as of now. Neither MSCS or VCS are supported to backup all instances with NBU

With standalone SQLINSTANCE $ALL makes it work.. but not with cluster

For you best would be to create multiple bch pertaitning to intance only and add all bch to same policy which in turn would protect all required dbs

Let us know if this is what you need
