SQL Server agent and long database names

Created: 24 Jun 2010 | 3 comments

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with backup exec 12 and the mssql agent, some of the database I backup have really long names, I have some error message like this in the logs

V-79-57344-33938 - '_AC070_realllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyylongnamedatabase TO virtual_device = '_AC070_realllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyylongnamedatabase0094aa74d6_440e_4b6e_88ce_a8870b69e4cd_' ' で始まる 識別子 は長すぎます。最大長は 128 です。'

It basically says the virtual device name should be at maximum 128 characters long. I cannot rename the databases because they are used by some proprietary we have.

I have also some other errors where the sql agent seems to generate improper SQL, all my database name are in Japanese, I think this have something to do with this.

Any advices would be warmly welcomed.

Thanks,
O.

I am wondering what can be reason for such a long name as windows also recommend to have only 128 character long file name. The backup exec will definately be in problem. Create a new database with smaller name and restore this one to the new one. There is no other way round.

Sazz,

the database name is long but not that long, the agent seems to append to the name some uid. The uid + the long name make more then 128 character. Plus I am wondering if the multibyte doesn't really helps ...

Anyway some solution apart renaming the DB?

My guess has to do with the japanese Db names...  I'd open a support case to see if it's a bug or not.

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
