if you install SEP license on SEPM, the clients communicating will take the SEP license.

Unlike mircosoft here we dont have server license and CAL. Its only CAL

SEPM is just the console and does not require any license. You should buy license for the clients which are managed by SEPM.

    Hi,

you need only one Microsoft SQL server CAL license just like Windows server operating license.

    only one license for SQL.

the clients dont talk to sql.SEPM will be communicating to the SEPM.

Here is what Paul Murgatroyd, Symantec Employee had to say in another thread.

Yes, from a technical perspective only the SEPM server will be seen as an SQL client.  However according to Microsoft's license agreement any system that directly or indirectly accesses data from the database requires an SQL license.  The clients will access data from the database indirectly through SEPM, also clients will send logs up to the server through SEPM.  Therefore they need a license.

so buy the processor license rather than CAL

"Thumbs Up" to Rafeeq's link of PaulM's answer regarding one SQL CAL per SEP Client.

This is how I've always understood it, and it applies equally to Altiris as well.

If in doub contact your Microsoft License partner. Microsoft agreements are often individually suited and some times it feels like you need a doctor degree to understand how it really works:P
