SQL Server Database and SEP
Hi All,
I'm trying to install SEP Manager on the same server as a new instance of SQL 2005. I don't know much about SQL but believe I have followed all of the required SQL Server configuration settings found in the "Installing and configuring the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager" guide. When I run the Management Server Configuration Wizard, I get all the way to the point where it says "Creating Database" but it sits forever at "Initializing Database". I've tried to find log files to see why it's hanging but havent' found anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Navigate to \Program
Navigate to
\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Tomcat\Logs
and look in scm.server0.log
install_log.err
And see if there are any errors
Else post the logs

Thanks for the quick reply.
Thanks for the quick reply. The only files I have in that folder are:
install_log.err
install_log.out
smbinstall_log.err
smbinstall_log.out
The first 3 logs are completely empty, the last log has:
Has valid SAV license
Info>> No SNAC license file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\etc\license

Also, this is running on Windows Server 2008 64-bit so the folder is Program Files (x86). Dont' know if that makes a difference.
EDIT: Also, I'm using SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 3
Please paste the logs for

There is nothing in that
There is nothing in that log. The file is 0 KB. When I open the file in Notepad, there is nothing in it.
Is this a remote SQL or local
Is this a remote SQL or local SQL.?
If its remote then try to uninstall & reinstall the SQL native client.
Make sure if there is any firewall in between then the respective port is open on the firewall I think its 1433 port that symantec uses. you will see that port in the installation wizard.
Please get your basics about SQL server straight
@Kavish: This may sound rude and hate to do this, but son, please get your basics about SQL server straight.
Doesn't matter if the SQL instance is local or remote, coz the SQL native client has to be installed on the Server where the SEPM is being installed. The SQL native client is installed as a default on the SQL instance server as well as part of the installation / configuration process, and the SQL native client on the SQL server box has no bearing / take whatsoever on your SEPM installation!
I've seen several posts by several people from Tech Support saying the same thing to people with a similar issue. Please for gods sake get your basic information about SQL server straight and then only start posting on the SQL issues.
Also, the SEPM doesnt use port 1433, its the SQL server installation that uses Port 1433 by default.
Furthermore, had there been a firewall between the server hosting the SEPM and the server hosting the SQL server that was blocking port 1433, the SEPM would not even anywhere remotely get to the stage of configuring and initializing the database.
If you want, get permission and I'll conduct a Level 200 training on SQL server for you people for free at your premises.

Kavin, SQL and SEPM are on
Kavin,
SQL and SEPM are on the same machine.
Follow this

Try to reinstall the SEPM
Try to reinstall the SEPM & use a new database instance name i.e use SEM6 instead of SEM5 & see how it works also you said it just stays on creating database let it run dont cancle the wizard & see id it gives you any error or something automatically.
I've followed everything in
I've followed everything in that Best Practices guide already. It says pretty much what the Installation manual for SEPM says.
Kavin,
I tried that too. I even tried creating a database manually and then using the SEPM wizard to point to it, still sticks on the "initializing database" part. The "creating database" step only takes about 2 minutes. I left it on "initializing database" for 2 hours and it never completed. The database itself gets created just fine. If I open SQL Server Management Studio, I can see the database SEPM creates, for some reason the databases just won't initialize. I'm sure I am probably missing a simple setting somewhere in SQL Server 2005. I may just have to call Support tomorrow.
Just check this document &
Just check this document & check if all the requirements are matched for SQL database

Some more info
@Tristan: The Initializing phase has been known to take time ranging from 1 hour, to almost 5 hours even on a SQL based SEPM.
Ditto if you're also trying out replication, it'd also take the same time.
Could you check if the SQL instance is configured to suspend active connections after a certain timeline from the Configuration manager?
Also, do check if you have the TCP/IP & Named Pipes setting checked and enabled on this particular instance.
HTH

Abhishek, Where can I check
Abhishek,
Where can I check about the "suspend active connections" setting? I've opened Configuration Manager but don't know what to look under.
TCP/IP is set to Enabled and Listen All is set ot Yes.
Named Pipes is set to Disabled should I Enable it? I didn't see anything in the manual regarding this setting.
EDIT: One more note, I tried again last night and let the initializing phase run until this morning (over 8 hours) and it was still initializing this morning when I checked on it.
Thanks for all the help.

hemu,
If I open a command prompt and type telnet 1433 I get "could not open connection to the host, on port 23: connect failed". I have 1433 set as the default port in SQL Server Configuration Manager and I have it set as the TCP Port for all IPs as well.
Edit: Okay, I did telnet "ip of server" 1433 and it went to a blank prompt which is normal. I also followed advise i found using google and did netstat -an | find "1433" and it shows LISTENING.

@ Tristan: Named pipes should
@ Tristan: Named pipes should also be enabled for everything to work properly. Even after 8 hours you're not able to get the database initialised, I'll say there is a dead sure chance that something is wrong in the configuration for the SQL server.
