We have Deployment Server 6.8 SP1 and Notification Server 6.0.6074 SP3 (including HelpDesk) installed on one Windows 2003 server.  Lately it seems the CPU on the server is really getting pounded with CPU Performance jumping from 60% to 80% and back.  The server has two CPUs and 3 GB of RAM.  There is 80 GB of free space on the hard drive.  We do regular backups so the tranaction logs should be clear.  How can I relieve the CPU pinging?

If so, 3GB of RAM is not nearly enough. By default, the OS reserves 2GB of RAM for itself, so that leaves everything else to squable over the remaining 1GB.

Are you running SQL on the same box?  If so, what version of SQL are you running?  If you are running 2005 Express, it will only utilize a single processor and is capped out to using 1GB of memory.  Unfortunately, that same 1GB of memory is probably being fought for by the OS.

Thanks Jim.  I bumped up RAM to 4096 MB.  The server is running better but still churning the CPU.  I might bump it to 8192.

Yes we are running SQL Server 2000 on the same box.  We are a small shop with under 300 computers.  We are using DS, NS, Helpdesk, and Asset Mgmt (to some extent).  Not using Patch Mgmt or Server Mgmt.

Try this: /3GB switch . It will allow an extra GB of memory. There are some caveats to this, however. Also, try the Health Check doc.

The CPU is still being hit even after configuring the /3GB switch and defragging and rebuilding the indexes for the Altiris database.  Any other ideas?
