This issue has been solved. See solution.

Long story off-topic for this forum but I have known good backup images created by Windows7-Pro on a USB 3.0 HDD that I cannot use the Windows repair disks on the same PC that is now running Windows8-Pro.

The on-Topic question is; can SSR 2011 (or 2013) be used to restore the files that were created by Windows?

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a long answer that is different or is the long and short answer the same?

The same I'm afraid.

The only non-Symante format that can be restored from (to my knowledge) is VMDK/VHD files.

Thanks again for the replies. I guess the good news is that Windows8 uses those file types, at least to some extent.
