I am cutting over to Altiris Patch Management to deliver all my client MS Patches but I keep running into one nagging issue with preparing the patches. From time to time a get the following message: "Software Bulletin MS*** is not ready for distribution. Please ensure that this Software Bulletin is Staged before creating a Software Update Task" when trying to use the task wizard. And once I get this message for a bulletin there is no way I can use the wizard to setup a task. The bulletin is staged (an re-staged and un-staged and re-staged and deleted and recreated all to no avail.) What am I doing wrong?

The original post was almost a year ago

Have you performed the steps that phillyfish mentioned? Do the number of updates = the # of downloads?

Multiple things to check

Go to http://kb.altiris.com and search for 'not ready for distribution'  - you will see multiple KB articles that address this issue.

From KB35086

Here's the steps to follow from the KB article. Also make sure the latest SP is loaded.

Go to the Manage Software Updates Page. Highlight the failing update. Right-click and select Disable from the drop down. Then right-click and select Stage from the dropdown. Doing this will invoke the code that will ensure the updates are ready for distribution.

If you still receive this message even after working through this issue, then something is failing during the re-create process and the Altiris Notification Server logs should contain additional information. On the NS Server, go to Start/Programs/Altiris/Diagnostics/Log Viewer, and open the logs. Search for the update in question on the search field at the bottom of the logs.

A report is attached to this article which, after being imported, will return the list of all updates associated to the bulletin and whether they have been downloaded or not.
