status: 800, EMM status: Media server is not defined in EMM

Created: 29 Apr 2013 • Updated: 29 Apr 2013 | 11 comments

We are encountering that error for our duplication jobs via SLP.

It is not newly setup and it is working before.
I already checked list from nbemmcmd -listhost and confirmed that the media server being used is defined.

Please advise on what's next that needs checking.

Thanks.

Do you need to duplicate from MediaServer1 to MediaServer2?

Do both media servers have SERVER entries for one another?

If it worked before, it means that SOMETHING has changed...

Double-check STU's specified in SLP.
Double-check STU properties. Ensure media server hostname is correct in each SLP.

Maybe provide screenshots of SLP and STU properties?

From media server which is failing :

nbemmcmd -getemmserver

is it working?

Netbackup Admin (Unix)

In addition to the above :

Are you able to connect to the problematic Media Server through the admin console -> host properties -> media server ?

If not,

Check the registry (if windows ) or check the bp.conf ( if UNIX ) to make sure the master server is listed correctly.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\NetBackup\CurrentVersion\Config

- double click on server and confirm the master server is listed first and all other servers listed exist.
- Confirm the client, browser are the media server name and EMM_SERVER key is set to the master server.

Thanks for you replies.

@Gary

I found some inconsistencies on the media server2 but I'm not sure what's next to check.

Are you able to connect to the problematic Media Server through the admin console -> host properties -> media server ?

Yes

kaidemitsui's picture

Just would like to add that scheduled backups using that media server is working fine.
Only in the dupication jobs that we are encountering that error "media server is not defined in EMM".

tia.

We see THREE requests for resources in job details:

30/04/2013 1:41:37 AM - requesting resource LCM_AUR_TAPE
.....
30/04/2013 1:41:38 AM - requesting resource AUR_TAPE
30/04/2013 1:41:38 AM - requesting resource @aaaaj

We need to see storage unit definitions associated with LCM_AUR_TAPE, AUR_TAPE and @aaaaj.

Unified log for nbrb may also shed more light on hostnames that the resource broker is looking for.

Use vxlogview to extract info. This example will report on last 10 minutes - adjust accordingly:

vxlogview -o 118 -t 00:10:00 >nbrb.txt

Please post .txt file as File attachment.

Hi Marianne,

@aaaaj is a disk media ID of the backup being duplicated.
AUR_TAPE is a storage group compose of 2 media manager STUs.
Not sure about the LCM_AUR_TAPE.

SLP setup is:
Backup - backup to AdvancedDisk - expire after duplication
    Duplication - AUR_TAPE - <retention>

Attached is the nbrb log.

Thanks.

Marianne's picture

The nbrb log does not contain any reference to any of the resources in Job details.

the -t option will only collect info for the last ## minutes. So, if duplication attempt did not happen in last ## minutes, you need to adjust the timing. You can use start- and end-date instead of -t option as follows:
vxlogview -o 118 [-b StartDate] [-e EndDate]

Surround the date for start- and end-date by single quotes in UNIX and double quotes in Windows.
For example:
-b ’1/1/2010 12:00:00 AM’

Please run the command again for a period that includes the duplication attempt.

Sorry guys for the late reply.

I was able to solve the issue by creating new SLPs for our backups. These new SLPs have exact configuration with the ones that are having issues.

Root cause is not yet identified. We're looking at corrupted policy but I'm not sure why/how.
