Strange IP Address range

Hi All,

I have a strange problem that is starting to appear in my Deployment console. I have 211 machine on the console with an IP address range 10.x.x.x depending on the site they are located in, but 31 of the machines have now started to get 169.254.x.x addresses and I have no idea why. The Altiris version is 6.9 build 365, service pack 1.

When I ping the machines they resolve to the correct IP address.

What do I have to do to ensure that the machine within the console display the correct IP Addresses

Thanks
Pommie

Multiple NICs?

Do the machines in question have multiple NICs?  (i.e. Wireless, firewire, additional wired nic).

That is an auto-IP when windows can't contact a DHCP server that is what it will assign itself.

I would right-click on the machine in the console, select properties and then goto TCP/IP.  See if there is a drop down for the nic.  If there is, drop down to the next nic to see if that is the IP you are expecting to see.  This will also tell you which nic has which IP.

Hope this helps.

if you use DHCP...

and i guess you do, so make sure that the scope is not full.

Check to see what the first adapter is

Disable the extra nic's if you aren't using them. Most likely a NIC that isn't active (hence the 169.x.x.x) is recognized as the first NIC. Wirleess, docking stations, all sorts of scenarios could potentially cause this. If you double click the machine then check the TCP/IP tab you will see what is recognized as the 1) NIC which will probably clarify things.
