  • 1.  sudden loss of management console services.

Last week altiris just went bonkers without any changes to the system that I'm aware of.  I haven't logged on to the console in over two weeks.

    The symptoms are:
Open Management console web > Manage > Computers - Webpage comes up but computers never show up.  It's just blank listings.
Open Settings > All Settings > I get "Access is Denied"
Open Settings > Security > Permissions I get "Symantec Management Server Error
An error has occurred that prevents the Symantec Management Console displaying correctly.

If this page is shown in place of a page or web part in the Symantec Management Console, navigate back to the page using the menu or tree and continue working. If the problem persists, see your local network administrator.

If this page is shown in place of the Symantec Management Console, one of the following could be the cause:

The "Altiris Service" service is not running. Start this service on the server and reload the console........"

    From the log viewer:

Failed to resolve resource query from the xml configuration.

Exception Details: Altiris.Reporting.DataSource.Exceptions.ResourceTypeNameNoMatchException: No resource type matches found with name: 'computer'

    Also getting Silverlight errors:

Done Error on Page details - Webpage error details

    User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729)
    Timestamp: Tue, 6 Sep 2011 13:20:48 UTC

    Also in computer application logs:

Login failed for user 'IIS APPPOOL\Classic .NET AppPool'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

    I've attempted to
    -reinstall .net framework
    -repair smp
    -register asp.net
    -sp sql server
    -checked db permissions

Don't know what else to try.  Any help is appreciated.

Side problem: I can never copy and paste from the log viewer.  If anyone has a tip for that too I'd appreciate it.

Is this a permanent state? If, for example, you restart IIS/Altiris Sevrices/the Server itself does the issue go away, and then come back?

    yes this is permanent.

I have done all that you mentioned.

One cause of weirdness like this I have seen is the SMP agent on the NS itself which is not communicating properly with itself. Doublecheck the agent on the server and make sure it can resolve the address it's reporting to.

Another option if you do not have a lot invested in this box is wiping it clean and starting fresh (this is more of a nuclear option though obviously).

I'm not reimaging the server.  If we get to that point again, we'll deploy another solution.

    The server can resolve itself.

    Thanks for the help, though.

aexconfig /configureall is the only thing that worked...
