Sumbit outlook msg for Symantec custom rule creation
Created: 17 Dec 2012 | 1 comment
Hi.
I've enabled on symantec Messaging Gateway 10.0.1-2, the possibility to submit to Symantec, mail message that messaging gateway don't recognize as spam, but there are spam.
I read on messaging gateway's manual, that Outlook message format (.msg) is not supported for submission. So i can upload a message trough messaging gateway web interface, but submission detail told me that is not valid format.
How can i convert msg format to RFC5322 format? There is some online tool for that? I search but i don't find nothing.
Sorry for my english.
Daniele.

Hello,
the .msg format is a proprietary Microsoft binary mail format used by Outlook. There are a couple of ways to get us a proper RFC822 format message (RFC822 is the predecessor to RFC5322, and is still referenced in the MIME fields as message/rfc822).
Symantec recently released a tool to help called the Symantec Email Submission Client (SESC):
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO74511
Other than the SESC tool, end users can submit missed messages directly by using the Forward as Attachment option in Outlook. Instructions can be found at about the middle of the following KB:
Manually submitting missed spam and false positive messages to the Symantec Security Response Center:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH83081
The section is titled "Mail client instructions for submitting valid samples (missed spam and false positives)". Make sure that anyone submitting messages are allowed in the Submitter List of the Customer Specific Spam submissions page.

Art
