  • 1.  Switching A Group Update Provider

    Posted Jan 04, 2011 04:19 AM

I recently Set up a Gup in a remote office to test the deployment of client and the effectivness of the Gup.

I am now happy that this is working correctly and want to change the GUP to a Server (windows server 2003) instead of the test pc I have been using (windows XP) as the GUP.

Two things I need to know which I am not sure about.

    • Is changing the GUP as simple as just changing the IP address in the Live update policy
    • Will changing the GUP to a server effect the type of definitions it downloads and updates i.e.Will the server (gup) only download definitions for the type of protection it has (Only antivirus & Spyware)  or will the server download the full definitions and push out to non server clients.

    Thankyou

----Yes , once the IP is changed in the LU Policy , in the next heart beat the client gets the policy and start working accordingly

    •  Will changing the GUP to a server effect the type of definitions it downloads and updates i.e.Will the server (gup) only download definitions for the type of protection it has (Only antivirus & Spyware)  or will the server download the full definitions and push out to non server clients.
    • ----No, the GUP functionality and the type of update being downloaded is independent of the GUP OS. So if it is an XP or a 2003 or 2008 it will download all the components. The server (gup) will download all definitions  and it is not related to  the type of protection it has (Only antivirus & Spyware). It  will the  download the full definitions and push out to non server clients.

I thought this would be the case but thought it better to ask the question before proceding.

I will change settings and post results back later.
