SWV - copying files from read only to read/write issues

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi folks,

SWS 6.1 SP7 - app version 6.4.1346 + Wise Virtual composer

OS Windows XP pro SP3 and Windows 7 pro SP1 (on domain (so far))

I'm a complete amateur with SWV and whilst i can package something like Firefox, I have missed out on the finer nuances of SWS so be gentle if i am doing something ridiculous.

I have an app that seems to package fine, but on running i notice the application complains about not having access to (write to probably) an area of the profile under 'All users'. I eventually conclude that this area should be in the writeable layer and find that it is in the read only layer. So I set about trying to move the files and this is where the problem starts.

Dragging and dropping the folder concerned inside the 'Layer Properties' from read only to write seems to tear the folder contents into pieces, some files go, some dont. When copying each folder seperately, some move some dont. When copying the original folder onto my desktop and then copying back into the writeable layer I get the same issue. Throughout all this i cannot get rid of the "read only" attribute check mark on the folder, the layer is obviously off, but everytime i uncheck read only and apply to all subfolders, it just reapplies itself instantly as if it were in the read only layer still. I've tried and reproduced this with Windows 7 pro as well as XP SP3. The real annoyuance to me is that when copying files around in the layer properties view of SWV admin not all the files move, but there doesnt seem to be a pattern. I found closing the window and reopening layer properties lets you get a bit further each time and in fact eventually got the entire folder and subfolders moved by individually recreating them and doing it one by one but theres still something not right with this. Often i can close and reopen the Layer Properties to find some folders have updated, it certainly doesnt always update live.

Apologies for the wall of text (again) if anyone recognises what I am doing wrong or why I am having these problems it would be a fantastic help.

BUMP!

Still needing help here with virtual packaging and read-only/writeable issues.

In addition, i woudl like to know why the Wise packager decides to put some things in read only and some things in writeable. I just did access 2000 and it all went into the read only layer. I then did access 97 which never terminated the capture so i manually stopped it after launching and i had everything go into the writeable layer.

Finally - are there any easier methods of moving files/registry between the read only and writeable layers other than the drag and drop which is acting up for me?

Whilst there might be a logical reason, i don't know it.

Hi Michael, You would want

Hi Michael,

You would want everything to be in the RO sublayer, because the RW layer is deleted on layer reset. Typical in capture mode everything goes into RO, when a layer is activated all changes from a process running in the layer go into RW unless excluded.

A restore point (right click in SWV Admin) can merge the RW data with the data in RO.

Not sure if the app allows is but you could probably avoid permisison changes by installing the app per user instead of per machine. User data will end up int he USER_Template(RO) and every user will get a copy in the RW.

Permissions to folders and files can be applied in capture mode, but you can easily configure them later on. The key is to set permisions on the RO sublayer (by default c:\fslrdr\1) with Windows Explorer where 1 is the magic number of your RO sublayer. You can make other adjustments while you are there, just make sure the layer is deactivated. The permission changes will be part of your layer when you export it.

Hope it helps,

Marco

Thank you!

Actually that is very helpful, i didnt think of editing from the layer rather than the tool, esp with complex changes.

I commited the changes on the access 97 app i captured and it copied everything from RW to RO, but didnt delete the RW. is that normal to have identical copies in both? I don't recall seeing that before either, just files in the RO.

You can tell i haven't used this much!

Thanks for your help!

True, a reset point copies

True, a reset point copies the entries instead of moving them. The RW part is no longer required, so i would recommend a layer reset after setting the reset point.

BTW, when exporting the layer you can specify to exclude the RW part from the layer.

Thanks, Marco
