  • 1.  sylink log to monitor definition file size

Hi, i read on this post, https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/current-defintion-size saying that by enabling sylink log, i can monitor the file size of the definition file downloaded. But it is to be enable on client and was wondering whether it can be enabled on the server that is installed with SEPM which is configured to download from Symantec server?

You enable it on all clients the same way. But yes you can enable on the SEPM as well. The sylink will show communication between SEPM and client. But it may vary, the definition size is not always the same.

    To sum it up,

Sylink debugging is used for troubleshooting communication issues between Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11.x and 12.1 clients and their Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM).

You won't see communication between SEPM and Symantec LiveUpdate servers in the sylink log.

If you are wanting to see how much data your SEPM is downloading from our internet liveupdate servers then you are going to want to review the log.liveupdate on the server.

    Windows Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate.

    Windows Server 2008+: C:\ProgramData\Symantec\LiveUpdate.

Here some information how to enable the sylink debugging on the SEP Client:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH104758

...but as mentioned above it shows only communication with SEPM or GUP from the SEP client side.

Hi Cameron, the SEPM actually is installed on Windows XP so where would be the location to review the log.liveupdate? Thanks.

Hi all, to sum it up, if i want to check the size of the data downloading from Symantec liveupdate servers to SEPM, i should check the log.liveupdate on SEPM like what Cameron had advised. As for sylink log, i can still enable it but might not be suitable as it is more for troubleshooting communication issues between SEPM and clients.

As for the log.liveupdate on SEPM, if it is installed on Windows XP, may i know where to look for it?

    You are correct

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate\Log.LiveUpdate
