Symantec 10.1 reporting server not showing up tried to reinstall but fails installing...

Created: 22 Mar 2010 • Updated: 24 Sep 2010 | 19 comments

I went to start SSC and reporting server fails to come up. This worked before and just stopped working. I received a interent explorer script error which I thought might be causing the problem. Update IE and java along with a slew of server updates. I uninstalled reporting server, MSDE, sql engine and reporting agents. Now, when I try to reinstall reporting server it stops and says cannot installe and stope half-way through install process. I m thinking that there is residual pieces leftover that I need to get rid of by running something like nonav tool, but my SSC is on this server and I'm reluctant to do this. Any ideas?

The default installation log file is <drive>:\Documents and Settings\<logged_in_user_name>\Local Settings\Temp\ReportingServerInstall.Log. If you have problems with installation, inspect the log file.

Download Microsoft Cleanup utility and remove Reporting server using that
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Un-install and re-install IIS as well..if you do not have any other website hosted on it.

The wizard was interrupted before Reporting Sever could be installed. Fatal error during installation. It fails after it installs SQL server desktop engine. i'm rebooting to attempt to install reporting piece

starts coping files then stops and rolls back changes. I did run the microsoft clean up utility.

can post the logs.
Go to start - run - %temp%\ReportingServerInstall.Log

and attach it over here.

there are no remnants of a ReportingSeverinstall.log on the server. It want install the Reporting piece at all.  I have the MSDE desktop engine running in systray.  I still think its got some leftover pieces from a previous install. It acts like some computers that fail to install antivirus and thats when I usually run nonav to strip all pieces of AV and then it reinstalls fine. Don't think I can do that with the same server running the SSC. I have SEP 11.0 running on another server and we are slowly migrating to this, but the reporting server for 10.x is still useful for detecting viruses and such.I hate to call support, because that usually is a long drawn at process jumping through phone menus.

it should create a log when it installs, set this key and run the msi should create the log.

holds good for servers too, activate this key run the install paste the log file with return value 3

thanks for the log, are u trying to run it from shared drive?
or you are trying to run the install local to the box?

Failed: 'IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT name FROM master..sysdatabases WHERE name = 'Reporting') CREATE Database Reporting'

Its the problem with the database

Check in Add remove programs and delete its folders as well..Check this doc for MSDE manual removal

I was able to remove MSDE sql engine from ADD/Remove. I must say that I tried SQL express as well when trying to add reporting server.

I might try SQL express again instead of MSDE. I also might try installing database on another server.I'm not a SQL admin so when it says make sure that "SQL Server is installed and configured properly for reporting server" I'm kind of at a loss. I thought it would configure automatically when it ran through its install of reporting server. Are there specific instructions on how to configure SQL Express for Reporting server?

Microsoft SQL 2005 Express Edition is not supported for use with Reporting Server.

to say another instance of sql.

I have not run the windows install clean up yet. Kind of hesitant to. Ok so lets forget SQL. How do I configure MSDE for reporting server once I have the sql engine installed?

Vikram Kumar-SAV to SEP's picture

First make sure you cleanup all MSDE left overs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320873

And for MSDE and reporting server installation recommndation read this
